will muskrat falls or covid19 dominate debate? let's find out
question period!

Ches Crosbie up first. Expresses sympathies for families of Cougar 491. Wells' Inquiry requested a standalone safety regulator. why hasnt this been done?

Coady: this is a difficult day for many. justice wells did a v comprehensive report. all rec's implemented
crosbie: we should do everything in our power for offshore safety. have safety regulations been revised for new deeper water projects?

coady: in 2013 justice wells reviewed and was satisfied with what happened. bay du nord yet to pass decision gate 3. im confident it will b good
crosbie: did the premier and minister of natural resources take legal advice etc before publicly announcing they were referring the reports to police?

coady: we were acting on advice to place this before police departments. it is in police hands. we definitely had a legal review
crosbie: if u got legal advice why are you making it a media circus. defense lawyers say you messed up prosecution chances. so was it good advice

coady: ur the one making it a circus. we gave it to the police and they will act accordingly
brazil: people want a daily update on covid19

haggie: the chief medical officer is doing a media event soon as she did yesterday. no cases in NL regardless of what facebook or snapchat say. 19 test results still pending
brazil: what resources are we getting from the feds for this

haggie: fed ministers view is that this is a downpayment; to spend what you need and if you need more, come back for me

brazil: what r our biggest needs?

haggie: we have cross-jurisdiction aid agreements for supplies
brazil: where is the snowmageddon help

davis: we've reached out to the feds and look forward to their response

pardy: will the minister have students self isolate if they take vacations over easter

warr: the health and safety of our schoolchildren is so important to us
pardy: we have the first case in canada of a child with covid19. will you update us on school policy for exposed students

haggie: it is recommended that canadians avoid cruise ships. those ppl r screened by CBSA. if anyone develops symptoms call 811 unless 911 for serious issues
p dinn: what will the university do if students working abroad have to come home due to pandemic issues

davis: this is indeed a global pandemic and mun is working very hard so that they are ready to make required changes based on best evidence at the time
p dinn: mun has a campus in harlow. cna has a campus in qatar. what is in place to look after employees and students

davis: its incumbent on all of us to follow the precautions outlined bt our health minister. mun and cna are working very hard on this, as is my department.
p dinn: are there any plans you can tell us today

davis: cna qatar is doing classes through distance learning. mun is also preparing a pandemic committee. we are working with the health department.
lester: what has been done to make sure there is an inventory of food and the means to deliver this food to our people

dempster: such an important question. i lived in a community for months w/ limited access to food. food insecurity is a concern. we are working to improve this
lester: in the event of a provincial quarantine or extended disruption of service, have you ensured a food supply

dempster: food security is a huge priority for this government. we are making moves to self sufficiency like more community gardens. the kids eat smart program. etc
dwyer: things in marystown are not good

bragg: they are good actually

dwyer: theres lots of vacant public housing in my district while there is a list of ppl looking for affordable housing

dempster: we signed a $70 M agreement for a new 9 year plan. we are renovating vacancies
dwyer: how will you improve cell coverage on the burin peninsula

davis: want to shout out the gonzaga students here today. cell service across NL is a priority for this govt. we have a cell pilot project. lots of other projects. millions of dollars. so we're happy. more 2 b done
conway-ottenheimer: did the minister do any consultation with clarke's beach residents before moving their ambulance?

haggie: demographic changes demonstrated a need to redistribute resources. the guy who took it over was eager to move. he says it works better now
coffin: why are you gambling with buying a $110 million equity stake in bay du nord as prices collapses

coady: weve invested in the offshore for years. great returns to the province and highlights the future of our oil industry. project unsanctioned. everything will b considered
coffin: an election would cost a couple million dollars. no one wants an election. are you anticipating a snap election from the new leader

osborne: no. we don't want an election. between covid19 and other concerns i dont think shortening interim supply is wise but 'will of HoA'
j dinn: why does the fisheries minister alienate people instead of not alienating them

byrne: the federation of agriculture is an independent organization. i have heard they have internal problems. 3 major associations withdrew within the last month
j dinn: NB is making students/families returning from vacations to isolate themselves and avoid schools etc. will you bring in new precautions now?

warr: we have many consultations with fed officials and our chief med officer. safety is paramount. we will take precautions
that's it for question period
John Haggie is here! Says the most vulnerable to covid19 are the elderly and those with acute or preexisting health conditions, so the province would like to limit recently returned travellers from visiting hospitals, long term care homes, etc. "Don't panic & don't spread panic."
No travel directives have been issued. "Anyone watching the news and taking a balanced approach have probably already concluded [they should limit travel]." Haggie is discussing Warr re: handling protocol around schools and isolation measures. "Ppl should avoid large gatherings."
Haggie quotes an unnamed social media quip: "If you want to avoid coronavirus, don't touch your face. If you want to avoid coronavirus panic, don't touch your Facebook."
Lisa Dempster is here! Asked about squaring Andrew Furey's support for accepting all 17 LeBlanc recommendations vs the current Liberal government taking their time, she says "there has to be a day of reckoning" for Muskrat Falls.
"I understand due diligence but I am also looking forward to repurcussions." Insists she is not breaking ranks with Cabinet. Says she wants consequences for MF but will not specify whether e.g. anyone should be fired. Says report confirms Labradorians' views on the project.
Asked again what specific consequences she would like to see, Dempster says she appreciates that the report was released without redactions and that HR is being involved. Asked about Stan Marshall's comments, she says "Stan has a job to do at Nalcor and I also have a job to do"
Asked to clarify what that means, she repeats it and says "I have my views and I am looking forward to the end of this process. I hope there will be consequences." Asked again to specify what that means she just says "you saw my post saying 'enough is enough'." And she's gone.
Siobhan Coady is out. Says House has just modified the parliamentary calendar to enable a process that would enable them to stay adjourned past March 23 should "something happen." Stresses this is a COVID19 precaution. This was negotiated with the other parties.
Says she is not concerned about Crosbie's suggestion that the MF report given to the police has been compromised in any way. Says the police will make the decision. Says there is no reason not to announce publicly they were referring it to the police.
Asked about Dempster's siding with Furey re implementing the LeBlanc recommendations, she stresses again that "just because we're being prudent doesn't mean we're not going to act."
'tis the Crosbster. Says it's good to have a precaution in place around House sitting but says adjournment requires consultation/cooperation within the House. Reiterates that the MF inquiry press conference may have prejudiced the police investigation it meant to inaugurate.
alright folks thats it for the House this week. they don't sit next week, and depending on how this virus goes, they may or may not sit the week after that. truly truly, never a dull moment.
