It's also a test of an outdated culture that basically thinks telework is for slackers. Back in the day, department chairs in my institution used to do "bed-checks" to see if people were in their offices at 4pm, and there are still a few people left who'd wish they still did. /1
I worked with a colonel back in the late 1990s who used to react with *fury* to faculty not being in their offices. I said: "Judge productivity, not desk hours," because many of the people who spent the most time at their desks were low-output. He didn't care about that. /2
There are jobs that absolutely require manning a desk during certain hours. But in 2020, those are far fewer than they used to be. I will never understand people who think warming a chair is a better indicator of work than actually producing...well, you know, "work." /3x
