Thailand poverty increased (not enough investment - @trinhnomics wrote a report) & will rise more in 2020 given the decline of tourism. The coronavirus reveals how dependent Thailand has become on tourism, esp Chinese tourists, & that will bite back hard as the world shuts down!
Thailand dependency on tourism as increased (also dependency on Chinese tourists):
Meanwhile, its ability to export to China has declined:
Thailand economic output growth relative to ASEAN neighbors:
Thailand investment has dropped, esp private investment but public investment too has dropped despite projects such as the Eastern Economic Corridor - key reason why poverty has increased:
Thai publicly listed firms don't want to bet on Thailand's future (can't blame them) & capital expenditure has contracted by -1% in the past 4 years while the current account surplus balloons.
Vietnam global export market share has caught up w/ Thailand (Vietnam's GDP is only half of Thailand's)
And Thailand is going to be silvering while poverty rates higher so not gonna age gracefully, unless it takes actions to address this
And of course, household debt is high (most debt in rural areas so the % of GDP figure masks higher vulnerability elsewhere). With the decline of tourism, exports & also the drought, this debt burden is going to hurt.
