TL/DR version: things are going to get very, very bad faster than we can possibly imagine. Meanwhile, Boris Johnson is exactly the person most of us fear he is. He has no magic recipe. He is just hoping our death rate won't be so embarrassing he can't brush it under the carpet.
Meanwhile, in China: "Saturday also marked the tenth consecutive day where Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital, recorded zero new infections outside Wuhan." Zero civil liberties, zero cases. It is a huge, huge tradeoff. But...

Austria has closed schools and bars and cinemas and restaurants and cafes and museums and parks and playgrounds. You're only allowed to go out with immediate family members. Only *essential* contact with anyone outside your family. Police enforcing the ban on the streets.
Meanwhile our own government's response can be summed up as...
"Wash your hands for 20 seconds. If you have a cough or a fever stay home for 7 days - we trust you! Don't call 111 unless you're ill for more than a week or feel you're dying. We won't test suspect cases habitually."

Let's say that we can't avert the coronavirus, but draconian social isolation (close schools, pubs, cinemas etc.) can slow it, as proven in other countries. Here's what happens after 30 days if you slow the daily growth rate from 25% to 15%...
Now, you could argue 15% is a pessimistic scenario. After all, China and South Korea both brought growth rates down to almost nothing.

But maybe more people disobey the rules here. Maybe we're less strict than them. The difference is stark even if you *still* have 15% growth!
The virus doesn't spread by magic. It can't teleport from person to person. It needs contact.

- That can be literal contact i.e. hugs & handshakes.
- It can be close transmission (sneezing etc.)
- It can be transmission from contaminated surfaces.

But something has to happen.

You can't both bring in draconian self isolation rules and not bring them in. That particular Venn diagram has no intersection.

Other countries are closing schools, cinemas, pubs, restaurants, cafes, playgrounds, parks, etc. Anywhere and everywhere that people can gather.
We most evidently are not.

Therefore the only possible conclusion is that our government is ignoring the combined expertise of all the rest of the world.

It makes not a jot of difference whether they looked at it and ignored it, or just ignored it - the result will be the same.
Coronavirus will spread through the UK population much faster than other countries. We've been behind the curve of some of the worst afflicted, but we'll overtake them because we're not putting measures in NOW.

Tomorrow there will be 25%+ more cases.

The day after 25%+ more.

A quick thread on the economics of a much higher top rate for the super-rich.

TL;DR version is that @AOC is on very solid ground here.

There is a lot of evidence that from an economic and fiscal perspective, we'd be way better off with top rates approaching 70.
@AOC Starting with the basic fiscal implications, the best and most recent research suggests that rates around 70 percent for top earners will raise the most revenue. At 37% currently, we are leaving a lot of $$ on the table.

@AOC Trickle-downers will argue that higher taxes on the rich won't raise money because the rich will reduce their work in response, but the evidence is really clear that's not true at all at current rates. Basically, the "laffer curve" doesn't really kick in until past 70.

Since it’s close to #Christmas , I figured it was worth going through a quick history lesson on the origin of the abbreviation “Xmas”. Though well-intentioned, those who fight against the abbreviation b/c it “removes Christ from Christmas” are incorrect. 1/
In our Latin alphabet, we use the letter X/x (ex) in “Xmas”. It was originally the similar-looking Greek Χ/χ (χι) - which is the first letter in ΧΡΙCΤΟC (CHRISTOS, Christ). The abbreviation “Xmas” dates back at least to the 16th century, & other abbreviations predate that. 2/

We need to pay attention to--and work to end--the use of solitary confinement. It is there, in the long-term lockdowns & sensory deprivation conditions that daily house upwards of 100,000 people in US, where the cruel endgame of American punishment is made clear. 1/
Solitary has always been a part of American prisons. It was central to the Quaker notion of "penitentiaries," only instead of penitence isolation led people to mental & physical decay. As well as rebellion & romance. See @activisthistory upenn.edu/pennpress/book… 2/
