Highrise is a 30-person fully remote team. I'm sharing our Slack best practices to stay connected without distractions. Thread: 1/12
We thread absolutely everything. We work in 7 different timezones, and nobody wants to wake up to a channel with 100+ messages. Threads reduce message clutter by 10x. 2/12
We use an #update-daily channel to share what we did yesterday and what we'll do today. We also share when we hop offline or online, which makes our virtual office feel "alive". 3/12
Tip for #update-daily channel: use the fantastic @geekbot_io app to automate morning checkins (we have no affiliation! just happy customers) 4/12
We use a #meeting-minutes channel to share meeting minutes from any 3+ person meetings. Someone is always designated as the notetaker. These minutes are generally a brief summary + to-do's. 5/12
We encourage everyone to chat in public rather than private. This prevents tons of redundant messages. It's particularly hard to remember to do this if you're a manager - live by your own rules here! 6/12
We use @heytacoapp to give each other recognition for going above and beyond (as well as birthdays and other celebrations). Folks can redeem tacos for movie tickets, but the value is in just being able to say and hear "Thanks, you're appreciated! 🌮" 7/12
We use @donut for random video 1-on-1's every 2 weeks. This is fun for a while, but I should warn you that for us it got old after about 6 months. 8/12
I use @useloom to share a weekly update on company performance, goals and challenges. I ensure slides take < 30 mins to put together and talk is < 10 mins. That way, I have no excuse not to share the Loom weekly. 9/12
We create a feature-specific channel called #feature-name for any feature that will take multiple people several days to complete. This de-clutters our standard #dev and #product channels. 10/12
We have unlimited PTO, but use @slackvacation to request vacation time via Slack for manager approval. Every Monday, our #update-weekly channel shares who's taking time off this week. 11/12
What are your Slack best practices, especially designed for remote teams? 12/12
