1. A very short thread on the power of data graphics and scientific communication.

Roughly a week ago, some very smart person* sat down, drew this graph, and saved lives.

(*It's 2 AM. Without an economist subscription, I can't quickly discover whom. Maybe someone can help.)
2. This single picture explains the concept of *flattening the epidemic curve* to non-specialists without requiring any additional text. Looking at the picture, you can see that even if you don't reduce total cases, slowing down the rate of an epidemic can be critical.
3. There is a lot of complicated epidemiological modeling behind this idea, but this graphic strips all of that away, and discards irrelevant details to provide a straightforward story that people find easy to grasp at a glance.

It *simplifies* and *highlights* what matters.

Q. データが報道や自治体発表と異なるが？
A. 個別のケースによりますが、厚生労働省の基準との違いによるものと思われます。厚生労働省では各自治体からの報告を受け、重複を除くなどして最終的に全国の集計をまとめています。その過程で、たとえば地域などの集計基準が異なる場合がありえます。
Q. 元データはどこから見られる？
A. たとえば3月3日12:00時点のデータはこちらを参照しています。厚生労働省 → 報道・広報 → 報道発表資料 → 3月 → 2020年3月3日（火）掲載「新型コロナウイルス感染症の現在の状況と厚生労働省の対応について（令和２年３月３日版）」

Sada, b. 1905, was the youngest surviving child of Shigeyoshi & Katsu Abe, a married, upper-middle-class couple of tatami mat makers in Tokyo with unblemished reputations. However, Sada and her siblings-- sisters Teruko and Toku, and her brother Shintaro-- proved to be a handful.
Shintaro grew up to be a notorious womanizer, who would eventually marry and run off with a significant chunk of his parent's fortune. And teenage Teruko would accumulate so many lovers that her parents would sell her to a brothel as punishment.

陸軍は兵隊に行った時の本籍地になるので、
ちょっと面倒。

Fun related factoid: Ruriko had to sign a document when we got married saying that she'd underwrite my plane ticket to the US when she was done with me. (身元保証書; it's the #2 bullet point. moj.go.jp/content/000007…)
#3 is that you're supposed to make sure your foreigner respects the laws, #1 is you're supposed to provide for their living expenses while in Japan.
(It doesn't feel intrinsically wrong to me to ask employers to e.g. post a bond for travel expenses. The outcome the government wants to forestall is "You hire N unskilled or semi-skilled laborers; you go under; we eat costs to repatriate and/or support.")
