President Jair Bolsonaro, today, again mocking the Covid-19 pandemic now exploding in the country he nominally governs.
In some decent news, the Brazilian Congress is poised to enact a guaranteed income in a country long anathema to such proposals. It's woefully inadequate but will help families survive as they isolate, and not have to follow this madman's decrees to ignore the virus & go to work.
Here was one more Bolsonaro gem today, bitterly complaining that even stores that sell lottery tickets are closed:

"Close lottery houses, for God's sake! Lottery houses have armored glass. The virus will not pass there!"

And by the way: the reason @GovHowardDean tries to discredit the Intercept is our reporters have spent years investigating how he profiteers off his DC access & political celebrity, taking cash from everyone from the health care industry to Iranian cults:

This @MotherJones story is completely false. Back **in January**, when most of the media was obsessed with an inconsequential impeachment proceeding, @TuckerCarlson was urging attention be paid to the coronavirus. Whatever you think of him, you don't get to re-write history:
What unmitigated audacity and dishonesty from @MotherJones!! Today they're claiming no conservatives took coronavirus seriously except conspiracy theorists.

Literally *the day after* Carlson urged people to pay attention to it in January, this is what Mother Jones published:

ITALY: After two days of a declining death toll (Sat: 793 ---> Sun: 650 ---> Mon: 602), the daily death toll today increases back up to 743, the second most fatal day yet, for a total of 6,820 deaths.

Total number of confirmed cases rose to 69,176.

Thread: I want to talk for a minute about governance, because @brazilcham is a nonprofit under IRS code section 501(c)(6) [business leagues, chambers of commerce, etc.] Generally, these nonprofit chambers of commerce lean very conservative, but due to having tax exempt status /1
they must maintain something of a "non-partisan" veneer. That said, business generally tries to play nice & ingratiate itself to whoever is in political power. But going to the length of puffing up @jairbolsonaro as their "Person of the Year" is simply a bridge too far. /2
As a nonprofit, these annual galas always comprise a giant chunk of their annual earned revenue; it's part of how they survive. So public pressure really puts the squeeze on them in very stark dollar terms, which is all they really care about & the only way to push for change. /3
