1/ Summary of HCQ + AZ UPDATED STUDY by @raoult_didier

N = 80 patients w/ COVID-19
Average age 52 yo (29% over 60 yo)
11.2% diabetes
7.5% heart disease
10% respiratory disease
16.3% hypertension

All patients treated with HCQ (10 days) + AZ (5 days).

2/ Patient presentations:

- 54% presented with pneumonia
- 15% febrile
- 5% asymptomatic
- Onset of symptoms to start of treatment = 4.9 days
- Screening EKG done before treatment and on day 2 (treatment not started/discontinued if QTc > 500ms)
3/ Results (post-treatment):

- Virus cultures neg in 97.5% of patients on day 5
- 93% neg PCR on day 8
- Time from treatment to discharge = 4.1 days (criteria for discharge clinical appearance or PCR CT ≥34)
- One death (86 yo) & one still in ICU (74 yo)
- Mortality rate = 1.2%
4/ How does this compare to patients in Zhou et al (no HCQ + AZ treatment)? thelancet.com/journals/lance…

(Raoult data in parentheses)

N = 191 patients (vs 80 patients)
Average age = 56 yo (vs 52 yo)
19% diabetes (vs 11.2%)
8% heart disease (vs 7.5%)
30% hypertension (vs 16.3%)...
5/ Comparison to Zhou et al cont. (Raoult data in parentheses)

Symptom onset to hospital admission = 11 days (vs 5 days)
Time from symptom onset to discharge = 22 days (vs 10 days)
Mortality rate = 28% (vs 1.2%)
Virus shedding = average 20 days (vs 93% neg by day 13)
6/ How does this compare to patients in KKW To et al. (Lancet) thelancet.com/journals/lanin…

(Raoult data in parentheses for comparison)

N = 23 patients (vs 80 patients)
Average age = 62 yo (vs 52 yo)
20% diabetes (vs 11.2%)
0% heart disease (vs 7.5%)
40% hypertension (vs 16.3%)...
7/ Comparison to KKW To et al cont. (Raoult data in parentheses)

Symptom onset to hospital admission = 4 days (vs 5 days)
Mortality rate = 8.7% (vs 1.2%)
30% w/ positive PCR >20 days from symptom onset (vs 93% w/ negative PCR by day 13)
8/ Although this most recent Raoult et al. study is without controls, a comparison to historical data from Zhou et al and KKW To et al strongly suggests that HCQ + AZ reduces viral load and shedding.

This could be critical to reducing the spread of COVID-19.
