I served as a full-time firefighter/EMT, and before that as a volunteer. There’s an element of the COVID-19 crisis related to our first responders that's getting far too little attention right now. (THREAD)
The strain on our field health care system (fire, police, EMS) was extraordinary before COVID-19, and it's about to get much worse as cases skyrocket in the coming days and weeks.
Yes, there will be many more calls for service because of this virus. But dig beneath the surface and there's a crisis looming that threatens to paralyze our emergency services delivery systems — beyond the response to COVID-19 — if it’s not addressed. I am not being hyperbolic.

The spread of #COVID19 (#coronavirus) is a challenge to us as a society. It is already exposing deep failures in our political and economic system, including the moral abomination of a pay-or-die healthcare system, the refusal by political leaders to heed scientists’ warnings...
and a precarious economy that leaves too many working people vulnerable to illness and economic ruin. For our society to overcome a pandemic in this unprepared state, we must meet it with collective will.
With accurate information, plus care & attention, we can control the spread of the disease & mitigate its effects. We can't expect to continue as normal in coming days & weeks, but if we alter our behavior now for a short while we may be able to avoid radical longterm disruption.

Gov. Polis says Colorado is now up to 72 positive cases of coronavirus. At least four are evidence of community spread, Polis says. Community spread confirmed in Denver area. 3 people in Colorado are in critical condition, Polis says.
“It is just a matter of time under we do have our first fatality here in Colorado,” the governor says.
