1/ If you are looking for something to read there is a mini history of Seattle in my Quincy Jones blog post. 25iq.com/2018/05/06/bus… Seattle politics for most of its history was divided between open town and closed town factions. Gambling, prostitution and other vices thrived.
2/ Hiram Gill believed vice was fine if confined to its own district. My maternal great grandfather wanted to clean up the city. historylink.org/File/2755 On March 3, 1914, voters elected Gill as mayor:
•Hiram Gill - 37,654
•J.D. Trenholme - 22,918

"Tren" is from Trenholme.
After Gill was elected Seattle became such a wild town the U.S. Army declared it off-limits to soldiers. In 1917 Gill, the sheriff and the police chief were put on trial for accepting police protection money from bootleggers. What 500 room building made Beacon Hill famous?

It's been 3 years since my first blog. I remember how terrified I was to hit "publish" on my first #blog post. Unleashing my words into the worldwide web was a scary thought. What if people hated my writing? Or worse, what if the article had mistakes? (1/5) #writingtips #SciComm
Importantly, this was supposed to be my first step towards transitioning into a career in #sciencewriting- a field that was a complete black box to my family and friends. Needless to say, everyone, including myself, was skeptical. (2/5)
Anyways, I tried, and learned 2 things over the years. 1) My writing didn't (positively or negatively) break the internet. At it's best and worst, readers moved on with their lives. (3/5)

I’m trying to turn threats against me into a positive by asking this: #Seattle how do we discuss race and racism?
I was at @komo yesterday that was locked down bc of threats and a colleague at one of the local tv stations said they got a call today that was anti-Semitic (being kind). So honestly we have a problem here.
I’ve sat down with several people who write about local Seattle politics and discussed this. None seemed the least bit interested in writing about race and politics.

Okay. History time!

You've probably seen photos of Commonwealth war cemeteries, with rows of white graves. They're heartbreaking images.

What you DON'T see are the thousands of small, tragic stories on each gravestone.

So I'm going to share some with you here. /1 #history #WW1
These stories exist because although every stone is similar, family members were able to pay to have a small, custom inscription made on each stone.

Which is why on Pvt J Low's grave you'll find this desperately sad inscription:

"Until we meet again. Mother." /2
Of course, the ABSENCE of anything is even sadder. Too often you'll see the nine saddest words in the English language:

"A soldier of the Great War. Known only unto God"

Those words appear when we know a body is there but not who. It was Rudyard Kipling who came up with them /3
