Masks in the community for uninfected people to prevent #COVID19 infection:
-Clearly lots of strong opinions here
-If you want to wear a mask, go for it
-The concern among many in medicine/science/public health is that masks may offer a false sense of protection..see below
What is the concern?
-Most masks are single purpose, less effective when reused
-Masks not worn properly - just observe...
-People constantly touch their face and readjust mask, negating any benefit
-Many types of masks need to be fit, some wearing improperly fitted masks
There is a lot more to protection than masks in healthcare settings - we wear eye shields, gowns, gloves, etc.
Also remember, healthcare workers are literally face-to-face with infected people, most in the community are not, as they are practicing physical distancing.
But to reiterate points above:
-Lots of strong opinions here and that is fine
-If you want to wear a mask, go for it
-***Just be mindful that masks may not provide the level of protection that many may think - its as simple as that***
As always, in science/medicine, I am completely open-minded to new data and to changing my opinion.
But simply stating that "country X uses masks" is not sufficient.
Maybe there will be a pivot in public health recommendations, and if so I hope this is data-driven.
Clearly there is a shortage of masks and other PPE and we need to be mindful of this during the pandemic to protect front-line healthcare workers. Somehow this needs to be factored in to whatever decision making is conducted at individual and community levels re: masks
1. Does wearing a mask protect me from getting #COVID19?
And
2. If everyone wore a mask, would this help stop or slowdown the spread of the virus?
Answer 1: maybe
Answer 2: maybe
Hard to be dogmatic without hard data
