Folks, the number of new deaths per day continues to rise exponentially. Now ~1000 deaths per day. It was ~100 deaths per day last week.

The number of new tests per day is not rising at the same pace. We may soon "bend the curve" by not testing people.

We really don't have time anymore. Please folks, headline should be "Wear an Improvised Mask Now. It's Better than Nothing."

The reason I'm sad is that improvised masks may be the only intervention that is safe, partially effective, and instantly deployable at scale.

There are no side effects. It doesn't cost trillions of dollars. It at least somewhat works. Please folks, let's align around this.

Act 1 was the virus — and is still ongoing — but Act 2 is a series of economic crises beyond anything we’ve seen before.

Like a meteor hitting the ocean it has kicked off a series of tsunamis, some of which are listed below, all of which are gathering steam.
More burgeoning crises, some of which are not economic:

- higher ed crisis: tuition no longer paid if lockdown continues

- SMB crisis: many have or will go bust

- police crisis: many getting infected, others depolicing

- military crisis: aircraft carriers being sidelined
- Hollywood crisis: studios shuttered, theaters down, zero rev, productions delayed indefinitely

- EU crisis: leaders openly saying it may fly apart

- Federal crisis: 50 states going their own way, no central coordination

- Soft power crisis: quickly losing influence abroad

DIY masks are just the beginning. Autarky is back.

Autarky is simultaneously anti-capitalist and ultra-capitalist.

Build so you don’t need to buy, so you can withdraw from the market.

Or build so you can sell, so you can win the market.

But build.
I’ve been interested in technological autarky for some time.

It’s a natural extension of open source, buying local, 3D printing, and other trends.

Interesting to see how far we can push it given that we have the internet.
In addition to tech, biotech, and crypto I think entrepreneurs should help turn America into producers again.

There has been phenomenal work on the “producer internet” — tools for analytics, graphic design, and so on.

What about the physical world?

2020 may end the 20th century, the century of mass society.

Concerts, events, rallies, marches, K12, higher ed, restaurants, bars, airplanes, mass transit.

Anything with tightly packed crowds of people is now a health hazard. Permanently reduced demand.
Concerts, events → streaming

Rallies, marches → slacktivism is the new activism

K12, higher ed → online

Restaurants, bars → cloud kitchens, delivery

Airplanes → infrequent except for permanent relocation, replace with VR tours

Mass transit → individual autonomous cars
Best counterargument: after Spanish Flu we had Roaring 20s

Best counter-counterargument: seems crucial to dig into, but circumstances appear different.

Economy feels less resilient, more leveraged. Spanish Flu lockdowns didn’t mean soaring unemployment. Worth diligencing...

Last week, the Intel Inspector General got roasted by Congress for not turning over a whistleblower complaint in the legally required seven days.

Now, the State Department’s IG, Steven Linick, an Obama appointee, has summoned congress to an “urgent briefing” this afternoon.

Per reporting:

“Linick reportedly asked for the meeting after his office obtained documents from the State Department's acting legal adviser.”

Sounds to me like State withheld information it was legally mandated to provide to Congress which Linick is now hastily forwarding.

Given the fact that last week’s drama centered on IGs’ obligation to forward *whistleblower complaints* though, don’t be surprised if State had received its own set of documented whistleblower concerns and buried them... until now.

We’ll see. Listen for more whistles today.

Week 2 SEC & ACC Thread:
Wake @ Rice (+19/58.5) Two played last year and Wake won 56-24. Deceptive scoreline though. Only 414-370 yardage edge for Wake, but 6.8-4.9 YPP edge. 137 plays so pace wasn't great, mainly due to Rice hogging it & Wake hitting big plays. Dortch 4 TDs w Hartman at QB n first start
Wake now has better QB and realize what capable of in air. They were still 17-20-243-4-1 last year, but that should be higher this year. Wake won great battle last week. Defense still rough, run game is bleh, but they are gonna go fast and stress teams via air and w QB run game

Week 2 CFB. Gonna go down the rotation and talk ACC and SEC:

GT @ USF (+3.5/63) Color me surprised by side and total here. Expected USF to be slight chalk but hasn't been the case. Total feels about a TD too high to me here but this is a very high variance game, IMO.
Not much to be gleaned from either team's Week 1 games against Elon and Alcorn State. I'll start with GT, I think they could be a candidate for improvement this year. I think the big upgrade was getting rid of Roof at DC and hiring Woody. Simplifying things is usually good.
Didnt' see GT week one but appears they are still trying to get Marshall to throw more and he's still throwing like the A-Back he played prior to QB. Earlier this week USF LB was asked about GT and he said, "Navy with athletes". Last time they played Navy, 52-45 win in 2016.
