Just a small creative burst after checking >170 student reports of my online course @wur. I needed to draw something 😁 In this thread I will quickly explain how your immune system can deal with virus infections
First you inhale virus particles
These viruses have keys for specific locks (blue thingies in the picture). So for example corona has the key for nose and mouth cells. With these keys they are able to bind and invade those cells
The virus invades the cell and uses the cells as a factory to make more of itself
Viruses need cells to go on living...so they might survive on surfaces such as doorknobs for a limited amount of time, but they cannot make more of themselves..
But how does our immune system detects the virus? All cells in our body that have a nucleus show what is going on inside the cell. All proteins that are made inside the cell are presented on a sort of info screen (uithangbord in Dutch, vandaag = today).
The police (T cells/immune cells) are checking these info screens to see whether nothing weird is showing up. If all the products that appear on the info screen are normale products the police leaves the cell alone. However,...
When the cells are infected with a virus, the virus products also end up on the info screen....Now the police (immuun cells) are alerted!! This should not be here! And they destroy the cell. In this way the virus loses its production factory and you decrease the spread.
The cells are replaced by healthy cells. So you are, it is a ratrace between your immune cells and the virus. People respond differently to viruses, because they have fewer or not well trained police, of the police is occupied with something else (other illness),
People can have more of less effective info screens..and also the amount of virusparticles you are exposed to to begin with can be different...
Luckily in times of corona, a lot of scientists are working together to find out everything there is to know about this virus infection and how we can fight it! Hurray for #science, #StayHomeSaveLives
