In order to slow down the explosively rising corona numbers, the government has announced a nocturnal ban on visits. Exit restrictions will be introduced between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
In concrete terms: You can still go out to drive to work or to stretch your legs, but you are not allowed to visit anyone. The regulation comes into force Tuesday at midnight, as Ösi Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) said at a press conference on Saturday.
It is part of a package of measures that will apply until the end of November - and which Kurz calls the “second lockdown”.
► With the exception of funerals, events are prohibited.
► Top sport takes place without an audience, sport is only allowed outdoors without physical contact.
► Cultural and leisure facilities must close.
► Hotels close. Only business trips are allowed.
► Restaurants have to close, only takeaway and delivery are still possible.
► Retail, schools and service providers such as hairdressers will initially remain open subject to certain conditions.
“It is necessary to take this step in order to avoid overloading the intensive care medicine,” said Kurz. On Sunday afternoon, the main committee of parliament still has to approve the measures.
The ordinance is valid until November 30th, the exit restrictions must be approved by parliament every ten days. The number of infections in Austria has been rising steeply for weeks to new highs almost every day.
The government fears that the hospitals will soon become overloaded. On Saturday, Austria counted 5,349 new cases within 24 hours to its almost 9 million inhabitants, after the record value of 5,627 new infections in one day was reported on Friday.

Iran is threatening legal action against New Zealand after finding that, in a joint operation with the CIA,
the Security Intelligence Service (SIS) broke into its Wellington embassy in the late 1980s and early 1990s to plant bugs. India also hit back at a SIS activity that took place during the same period,
requiring the foreign ministry of New Zealand to investigate a SIS break-in where code books were photographed and passed on to the MI6 of Britain. In a mission called Operation Horoscope, which was directed by the CIA, the SIS raided the Iranian embassy in Wellington.
