1/9🧵 It's grievous #CDNmedia won't do its job so it appears I'm betraying my gender for contributing the facts
But problem with this narrative is they're omitting the part where Chu met the girl at a bar & that's what everything hinges on due to Supreme Court precedent #Thread
2/9🧵 Reason it matters that Chu met her at a drinking establishment is because Supreme Court ruled it's reasonable to ascertain someone is an adult, due to the pub's legal onus to check IDs to permit entry. Chu can't be prosecuted for luring a minor since she misrepresented age
3/9🧵 Now, with the amount of people who don't know the first thing about #CDNlaw + #CDNmedia failing its due diligence to inform, everyone is hopping on a political bandwagon to seek vengeance & claim the system is completely broken
💥This discourages women from reporting💥
4/9🧵 The reality is that police services used their internal code of conduct to punish Chu for touching the girl's leg, because that's also not considered sexual assault by #CDNlaw standards & her age couldn't be cited due to misrepresentation at the tavern by lying to enter
5/9🧵 Reality in Chu's case is the system went above & beyond to mete discipline through the Human Resources Dept (HR) because he couldn't be criminally prosecuted for anything
That should be encouraging to #CDNpoli women, but no one's political agenda actually cares about women
6/9🧵 Instead most in #CDNpoli are continuing to misrepresent #CDNlaw, to keep women voting in fear & a manner that benefits political opportunists who can manipulate the reams of #disinformation coming from #CDNmedia, because news is now owned/controlled by political actors too
7/9🧵 Worse yet, public has no skills in #MediaLiteracy during this #AgeOfDisinformation & they'll target me for setting the record straight, because it's easier to call me a traitor than fixing the real problems or looking in the mirror to discover how you might've compounded it
8/9🧵 Make no mistake: Sex assault is a horrendous problem, especially for paternalistic societies trying to escape the entire history they were built upon
But #CDNpoli & #CDNmedia are making it worse by exploiting false narratives for votes & revenue that prevents real change
9/9🧵 Journos have an ethical duty to relay the facts without emotionally driven editorials that 'torque' the narrative, or misrepresenting #CDNlaw + #RuleOfLaw to advance anyone's political or financial interests
Doesn't help women to be disinformed about sexual assault law so they don't know what to expect, despair in silence, become discouraged from seeking support they (falsely) don't believe exists, or become disabled from fixing what is still wrong with the system
11/9🧵Postscript
Problem with Sean Chu is #CDNmedia & constituents never vetted him to know his disciplinary history with police board or subsequent domestic violence with a romantic partner that allowed him to be repeatedly elected. Issue is HR #privacy/#disclosure, not #CDNlaw
12/9🧵Postscript
So long as #CDNpoli & #CDNmedia keep women chasing their tails with 'torqued' narratives, we will never be able to make progress on improvements to sexual assault law because the real issues are being stifled by #disinformation. No honest debates are possible
13/9🧵 Postscript
And every time women fail to resolve 'torqued' narratives concocted by politicians for votes, or #CDNmedia for lucrative clicks, it sets our gender back decades because #disinfo & sensationalism are not supported by legal facts
Thanks for disinforming teenage girls RE lying about their age in adult/sexual scenarios to endanger them further
The agenda to axe Chu harmed all girls deeply
15/9🧵 Final
It's been 💩 for me to have to correct everyone as a rape survivor myself
Where I lose confidence in #CDNpoli & #CDNlaw is due to the fact that lawyers & politicians are protecting themselves by remaining silent to stay out of the fray, using women as vicious pawns
16/9🧵 RESPONSE
A follower shared an updated story about Sean Chu with me via CTV. It seems some of you think this puts an end to arguments in my #thread, but it only raises more serious issues
But CTV failed to state how it obtained the hearing record, if it was able to verify its complete authenticity, & failed to post with the story
However the record surfaced is likely surreptitious because of privacy law + minor complainant
18/9🧵 RESPONSE
To believe every allegation in the CTV report is to disbelieve Alberta Court of Appeal & reason they tossed most of it. It's as if #CDNmedia became judge/jury/executioner
This is not journalism & CTV is also required to report why Appeals Court rejected claims
19/9🧵 RESPONSE
It was written as 'gotcha' yellow journalism & if CTV intended to report ethically, they would've taken the time to verify everything as is legally required
Moreover, because the girl was underage it's likely they've broken a statutory publication ban for minors
20/9🧵 RESPONSE
That CTV didn't do the legwork of confirming & reporting if there's a publication ban is evidence of negligence. There'd have to be a court challenge to unseal the official documents, or pre-existing court order that the girl sought herself to proceed as they did
21/9🧵 RESPONSE
It doesn't matter if someone posted the docs online. Doesn't make them fair game to #CDNmedia, nor can it circumvent statutory bans to protect minors
Also doesn't matter if the girl is a woman now. These scenarios are decided by the girl's age when it happened
22/9🧵 RESPONSE
In fact, CTV & #CDNmedia have set underage girls back so far that it's now unsafe for anyone under 18 to report a sexual assault. Voiding youth anonymity can be a criminal offence for anyone who traffics the poisoned fruit without court order & verification
23/9🧵 RESPONSE
Finally, like it or not, Chu passed a polygraph & he was successful in Appeals Court while the complainant was mostly not
To believe the current narrative is all lies from Chu & all truth from the girl is to deny the rule of law, evidence, & legitimacy of judges
24/9🧵 RESPONSE
#CDNlaw & #CDNmedia aren't supposed to be Monty Python or Witches of Salem Trial. In no way, shape, or form does this help victimized women
It's cringeworthy that Chu pursued a girl half his age but that doesn't merit unethical reporting & abandoning rule of law
25/9🧵 RESPONSE
Media reports on sex assault also can't be breathless or rushed to meet any deadline. They require the most due diligence imaginable & vetting by the agency's libel lawyer prior to publication. In my experience, that CTV report wouldn't satisfy legal verification
26/9🧵 RESPONSE
At this stage the only thing that's certain is someone committed libel. Either Chu when he claimed in #CDNmedia to meet the girl at a bar, or media when it cited secret documents that lacked chain of custody verification to suggest he was lying about the location
27/9🧵 RESPONSE
But in both those scenarios it was #CDNmedia that failed, because it behaved like a megaphone for aggrieved parties & declined to verify any claims before printing
In the end, teenagers aren't safe to report sexual assault or they could now wake up to headlines
28/9🧵 RESPONSE
And women everywhere will be discouraged by their social circles from reporting sex assault, because #YYC, #ABleg, #CDNpoli, & #CDNmedia decided publication bans have no force & neither courts nor legislation can protect them from leaked or misrepresented records
29/9🧵 RESPONSE
Every painstaking advance for women's rights since the 1950s is being undone, by toxic politics high on disinformation & a manic press gallery looking for a quick fix of dopamine
I come from an old school where praise is earned, laws are heeded, & kids kept safe
30/9🧵 RESPONSE
What no one has considered is that if the girl leaked the docs, she could be deemed an unreliable witness trying to pervert the course of justice should any part of her story be deemed a fabrication in a renewed legal process
31/9🧵 RESPONSE
If it wasn't her directly, any other person may be criminally charged for leaking the private records without following legal procedure
If the docs were altered in any way (as CTV never claimed to verify), that person may cost the press its protection of sources
32/9🧵 RESPONSE
There are several good reasons why journos have to follow the rules & this story is murky in every which direction
By abandoning press ethics & procedure, CTV could yet find itself sued by either the girl or Chu... or perhaps both
33/9🧵 RESPONSE
But no matter how this narrative finally unfolds, every raped teen in #CDNpoli will believe #CDNmedia can publish their trauma regardless of legislation & court orders
That's #1 reason to get reporting right so Gen Y/Z doesn't boycott the system as untrustworthy
34/9🧵 RESPONSE
As it stands, the only verifiable information provided is that the current leaked docs were destroyed in a flood during 2013
That means only the Alberta Court of Appeal has certified copies of evidence & CTV stated no effort to obtain the bonafide record
35/9🧵 RESPONSE
CTV has further colluded the story by introducing an unnamed officer who was with the girl first & asked Chu to drive her home from either a bar or a restaurant, depending which narrative you believe
They didn't even try to contact the other officer
36/9🧵 RESPONSE
If story is true about another officer (despite lack of verification), all CTV did was muddy the narrative on purpose
No libel lawyer would allow CTV to write about a cop without seeking their comment first. Now we don't know why Chu had to relieve him
37/9🧵 RESPONSE
So if you were a girl or woman who was raped, would you subject yourself to the #CDNmedia political circus that becomes of these allegations, whether guaranteed protection from it or not?
If you were accused, would you believe in due process & Charter rights?
38/9🧵 RESPONSE - FINAL
Because only outcome I can see is destroying everyone's faith in democracy, the rule of law, & Fourth Estate. The unprofessional behaviour of #CDNmedia & #CDNpoli lately has only served to delegitimize ALL the estates
Soon after the #Elxn44 writ dropped, multiple IP addresses began #hacking my bank account
According to bank security (that happens to be the HQ for all #CDNpoli banking #NatSec security), every attack arose from @Rogers/@RogersHelps accounts
And by no means was it even typical hacking. It's the type that put #NatSec on full alert because it compromised bank security as well as my own security & overrode all the safeguards that banks have in place
It's outrageously serendipitous that #Huawei's Meng Wanzhou signed a plea deal today, the #2Michaels are coming home from China, & that Grimes is reporting marital troubles with Elon Musk
Could've never imagined those topics would intertwine like this
When it comes to conflicts of interest in #CDNmedia my criticisms are not partisan
For #J_school legal reasons it has always been imperative for journos to decline reporting on people or matters that involve them & to ethically disclose when that isn't avoidable
I've received a threatening letter from lawyers on behalf of @MercedesGlobal & @GlobalNews to prevent me from speaking about Stephenson's role in #CDNmedia as the wife of Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole's #Elxn44 director
I will not comply with demands made in bad faith by @GlobalNews & @MercedesGlobal, nor will I shrink from unfounded #SLAPP allegations that are libelous against me. I ask that you cease & desist with this harassment. Here are my reasons (con't):
On the 1st page of your error-laden defamation notice, you claim that I've caused @GlobalNews & @MercedesGlobal "serious damage" but fail to state any negative consequences & fail to provide evidence of damage
1/9 I've had enough of #Elxn44 depravity. A death threat was broadcast about me by a podcaster you all listen to. Daily there are men on Twitter #SnitchTagging me to gun nuts to spark confrontation
#FYI I've already been shot by a 357 Magnum & I will not be intimidated by anyone
2/9 Most of you want the difficult reporting on dangerous topics that keep you up at night. But on social media, there's this trend where some of you (too many of you) throw female reporters at your enemies, as if we're virtual human shields you've nominated to fight your battles
3/9 But as you 'get your popcorn' to spectate at the events you've chosen for us to do battle, against the very entities you're afraid of, some of them try to track us down in our communities. I've had calls to my home from Yellow Vesters, Wexiters, Qanons, you name it
Someone alerted me to a new post in Zelda's Facebook #HateClub (thank you)
On the surface it indicates a #Conservative partisan/electoral purpose & that's interesting enough, but upon digging deeper it's a legitimate cause for #NatSec concern
.
Since Zelda went into hiding over violent protests that terrorized hospitals & Liberal campaign stops, participants scurried to find new places to organize & a 🇨🇦 companion to Parler has emerged
There's been much ado trying to insulate Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole from the vulgar & violent uprising surrounding right-wing causes during the election
But on #Aug23 the CPC posted propaganda that specifically invoked violence as a motto
