Day 37 of #Russia's war in #Ukraine and this is Friday's daily thread of news & developments.
First let's have a look at the UK govt's view of the situation today. Ukraine continues to make progress towards breaking the siege of #Chernihiv.
They also still edge towards #Kherson
Sometimes dark humour is the only way to cope when your neighbour has launches a totally unprovoked war on you...
Mayor Ivan Fedorov says #Russia is allowing residents outbid the occupied city. But they can only go to occupied #Crimea.
Seems Russia's war may have been a way to solve the depopulation problem.
North-east from #Brovary, another small town has been liberated.
Here #Ukraine fighters stand outside the town hall of Velyka Dymerka recording this message to prove Russians have been forced out.
#Ukraine's liberators of Velyka Dymerka (see previous tweet) also posted a couple of photos, including inside one of the Russian bunkers.
An update on #Russia's alleged losses in #PutinsWar
274 aircraft and almost 100 Multi Launch Rocket Systems.
17,700 troops estimated killed, at current rates will be 20,000 in around 10 days
*Figures may be exaggerated by Ukraine
Very disappointed that @SkyNews is showing live a press conference with the Foreign Minister of a terrorist state.
Currently Russia FM Lavrov is in #India.
Not even Al Jazeera nor Turkish TRT (nor the BBC) is showing this live.
Yesterday there were unconfirmed rumours of troops from the annexed (from Georgia) territory of South Ossetia refused to fight against #Ukraine.
Now the ex-President of S.Ossetia has admitted they left Ukraine without permission.
The Battalion Tactical Group was moved to Donetsk
New drone footage from #Hostomel which saw some intense fighting.
Residential areas around the airport obliterated - the ruins of the world's biggest plane, #Ukrain's "Dream" Antonov lies on the runway with other abandoned aircraft.
The town of #Bucha west of #Kyiv. is officially free of Russian soldiers.
Like neighbouring Hostomel and Borodianka, it was almost completely destroyed in #PutinsWar as the invading army couldn't get further than the satellite towns on the edge of the capital.
No real surprise that #Russia continues to block hopes of aid reaching #Mariupol'
The Red Cross had hoped to manage the evacuation of citizens still trapped, as well as allow aid in to the city. The ICRC team returned to Zaporizhia and say they'll try again tomorrow.
#Ukraine has formally denied attacking the oil depot in Russia which was hit in the early hours today.
Russia claims two helicopters entered its airspace at 5am with the attack on #Belgorod just a few minutes later. However Ukraine says that "does not correspond to reality"
Earlier today in #Konotop a man died when a car went over a land-mine.
Three others were injured in the incident in north-east #Ukraine. Russian soldiers are also said to have shot another civilian in the town.
As well as Borodianka, Bucha + Hostomel, 15 other #Kyiv Oblast villages have been liberated from Russia today:
If only they'd watched the #Chernobyl mini-series!
One of the Russian soldiers messing around digging in the exclusion zone, has already died of radiation poisoning according to reports.
Another 26 are said to be very sick in hospital.
A Turkish TV channel has proved Armenia fighter jets have been flown to 🇷🇺 to kill Ukrainians.
#Armenia officially denied the claims after word leaked out, but journalists tracked the flights and backed it up with satellite images.
Meanwhile NATO is scared to give planes to 🇺🇦
A big fire is raging in #Kherson amid rumours it could be yet another strike on Russian gear at the airport #Chornobaivka (#Chernobaevka)
Governor of neighouring Mykolaiv, Vitaly Kim began the rumours by posting a photo of the blaze and then "1 April, Chernobaevka"
#Ivankiv another town in #Kyiv region free of Russian troops again.
Legendary film director Oleh Sentsov published these photos. In a sham trial he was sentenced to 20 years in jail in Crimea in 2014 after Russia's 1st invasion.
He served over 5 years before a prisoner exchange.
My favourite video of the day. #Ukraine 2022 in 20 seconds.
Amid the ruins in the outskirts of #Kyiv a Cellist plays.
Meanwhile behind him a man appears to continue with his life, despite the lack of a front wall.
One of the best TV reports today came from the BBC's Jeremy Bowen who witnessed the horrific war crimes committed by Russia west of #Kyiv.
Wow! #Moldova refuses to align with the EU over sanctions on #Russia.
President Maia Sandu, elected on an anti-Russian standpoint, now says the country is too vulnerable to losing gas and oil. Astonishing considering it may be next in Putin's firing line
Earlier in the day a cancer hospital in #Chernihiv was hit.
Just 22 patients remained at the hospital in the besieged northern city dubbed "the new Mariupol". None of the patients was hurt when the shell struck but 2 staff suffered mild shrapnel wounds and another had concussion
#Odessa has come under quite sustained attack this evening.
Local officials report air defences working well in the Black Sea resort. It's believed damaging critical infrastructure was the plan but none hit the intended targets #Odesa#StandWithUkraine#StopRussia
Reports coming in that #Kharkiv and #Dnipro have both been hit with missiles (maybe shells).
Not confirmed yet, but 3 explosions heard and reported in Kharkiv, while in Dnipro already reports of casualties after an explosion there.
The explosions in #Odesa appear to have been Russian missiles being taken down by #Ukraine's air defences.
The local administration reports no problems and no damage to the city.
In #Dnipro the information I am getting is that no residential areas have been hit. There are fires, maybe some infrastructure has been damaged, but no further news likely until the morning.
Welcome to the weekend and to Day 38 of the Kremlin war on #Ukraine.
More morale problems for Russia with irradiated troops, heavy losses amid the withdrawal from #Kyiv and still question marks over the bombing of the fuel depot on Russian soil.
All the news, all day, in this🧵
I am still gathering news and data on the Russian attacks on #Ukraine during the night.
#Kharkiv again looks to be worst hit, with endless explosions heard. Some fires burn - this one video submitted. Remember exact locations cannot be revealed, hence the blurring
Day 35 of #Russia's war of choice.
5 whole weeks of hatred, death and destruction.
For what?
Talks of peace, and "scaling back" yesterday were followed by missiles fired across #Ukraine at night.
All the news, and a few views of mine, in this thread⬇️
1/2 A few people write saying #Ukraine should compromise or #Ukraine should give up on NATO or Crimea or Donbas etc.
Let me remind you #Ukraine is neutral. It never invaded any country. It was never at war until Russia invaded (twice).
Any compromise is rewarding the aggressor
2/2 It's an old tactic.
Bully. Wage war. Demand unattainable amounts.
Appear to lower your demands and you've compromised! Is everyone stupid?
Please also remember Putin is a compulsive liar. He broke written agreements over Ukraine, he promised not to invade. Do not trust him!
We've already reached Day 34 of #Russia's illegal war in #Ukraine.
It's the day when peace talks resume, but I'm guessing the attendees will be careful about cups of tea, chocolates or shaking hands after the nerve agent stories yesterday.
All war updates here⬇️ in real time:
Front lines haven't moved much for a week.
Russia's almost taken #Mariupol (see end of yday's thread).
But a little west #Ukraine troops advance towards trying to reclaim occupied #Kherson.
This post says Russians seem to be leaving the city all morning
Govt pledging most citizens won't be unduly affected
Secretary of the Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov says "it can be restricting traffic, additional transport checks, documents checks. These issues are preventive, so that the country remains calm."
