Great move from #Canada. The worries about depleting Western weapons stockpiles are largely misplaced: what is happening in #Ukraine - defending Europe from #Russia - is what these weapons were acquired for in the first place.
#Turkey's ruler Recep Tayyip Erdogan says #Sweden has "given us the promise that 73 (#PKK) terrorists will be extradited", which does not appear in the text of the memo signed with #Finland. Erdogan is threatening to veto #NATO membership without this. ft.com/content/00699a…
For all the slowness and backsliding, the trendline of #Europe uncoupling from #Russia's energy resources is clear. In retrospect, this may turn out to be the most damaging thing #Putin has done to his country; has effects way beyond economics.
Since #Russia invaded #Ukraine on Feb. 24, there have been detentions of Russians every day for protesting the Putin regime's actions, with the single exception of June 13, reports OVD-Info, a human rights NGO.
#Russia is beginning the show trial of #American citizen Brittney Griner
#Russia has taken less than one-half of one percent of #Ukraine's territory over the past month, despite concentrating on the eastern areas contiguous with their own border, and the cost for this has been enormous
The Lviv council has symbolically voted to ban the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which answers to Moscow's Patriarch Kirill. There are four UOC churches in Lviv. Most worshippers in Lviv are Eastern-rite Catholics, who answer to Rome. usnews.com/news/world/art…
#Estonia's Prime Minister pleased that #NATO is moving from a "deterrence" to a "defence" posture on the eastern flank, with the Baltics and other states bordering #Russia, though she notes that this has to be seen in actions not just words.
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Russia has been forced off snake island after #Ukraine's campaign with missiles, drones, and anti-ship weapons. The Russians have managed to take the village of Pryvilla, north of Lyschansk, and heavy fighting continues around the oil refinery.
#Russia's Duma has introduced a bill for "special economic measures" to give #Putin's office additional powers to keep industries working after hours, specifically to repair and produce weapons. A sign the sanctions are having some bite. kommersant.ru/doc/5436790
Positive signs from #NATO to counter #Russia in the #Balkans: Britain recently announced additional military forces to Bosnia, and now #Albania confirms the Alliance is in talks about building a naval base in Porto Romano on the Albanian coast. reuters.com/world/europe/n…
#Russia's domestic repression extending to the hockey team: the case of Ivan Fedotov
Bad enough #Russia had to return to bomb its own equipment after losing Snake Island to #Ukraine. Worse than three out of four airstrikes missed the island.
#OTD 1916: The first day on the Somme, a terrible bloodletting for the British and French, with 20,000 killed and 40,000 wounded. The campaign, however, nearly broke the Germans on its own, and was crucial in setting up the Allied victory two years later in the Great War.
The Franco-British Somme offensive in the west combined with the Russian "Brusilov Offensive" from the east. Had several other factors gone differently, e.g. the Romanians had come into the war a couple of weeks earlier, it might have shattered Germany in the summer of 1916.
The effect of the Somme-Brusilov experience in the summer of 1916 convinced Germany that nothing like that kind of land-based set-piece battle must ever happen again. Berlin switched to trying to suffocate the Allies with a naval blockade that in the end sealed its fate.
Thread: 29 June 2022: Day 126 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
The #Russian assault in eastern #Ukraine is making relatively slow progress at high cost, but they are able to "achieve" one thing: the devastation of Luhansk
- #Russia making "incremental advances" toward encircling Lysychansk
- Russia's incapacity with guided missiles makes it "a realistic possibility" they hit the Kremenchuk mall accidentally, albeit Moscow tolerates a high level of "collateral damage"
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Ukraine continuing to "consolidate" on the high ground over Lyschansak after falling back from Severodonetsk and disrupting #Russia's command/control with "strikes deep behind" the lines. Moscow expending a lot of strategic missiles for minimal returns.
#Britain: Ahmiri Azizi, 24, an asylum seeker from Iran living in Sheffield, a supporter of #IS, has been charged with seven counts of sharing terrorist material from June-November 2021, inc. one after the Liverpool women's hospital attack in Nov. 2021. examinerlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-…
A co-defendant alongside Azizi is Mohammed Hussini, also an #IS supporter, who has also been charged with four counts of disseminating terrorist material on Telegram between August and November 2021.
Interestingly, "Azizi's defence is that his phone was hacked by or on behalf of the Iranian government. John Jones QC, defending, said that Azizi supports Kurdistan becoming an independent nation and was an opponent to Iran and IS."
