Need to catch up on yesterday's news?
Missed the one about Russian doctors setting their own patient on fire, or the suspected #Ukraine hits of #Russia's bases in two regions?
Today may be a landmark day in the war.
All eyes on #Rammstein where the regular meeting of #Ukraine's allies will take place, and I am confident a number of nations will supply #Leopard-2 tanks to Kyiv even if #Germany continues to object.
Within the last hour or so there's already been another huge helping hand lent by #USA
Washington DC has played a blinder with alphabetti spaghetti:
NASAMS, HIMARS, HARMS, HMMWVs, MWRAPs plus IFVs and APCs and more being given to #Ukraine to #StopRussia
Here's the full list:
Britain again points to #Wagner and the contradiction that mercenaries are still illegal in Russian law, and yet "Putin's Chef" Prigozhin continues to cook the books and gorge on profits.
#Russia has been meeting @ICRC reps, demanding they "protect the rights" of Russians captured in #Ukraine.
Of course at the same time we should remember the Kremlin have not once allowed the Red Cross nor the UN to the site of July's massacre of Ukrainian POWs at #Olenivka.
I remember in February calling for the skies to be closed, or at least supplying Ukraine with fighter jets to save democracy. Two editors mocked me. Just saying!
Forgive me for giving this another plug. Skip right on by if you saw it yesterday!
More concern over an appointment made by Andriy Yermak's office.
Yermak is Zelenskyy's right hand man, heading the President's Office. But red flags raised again at the latest arrival at the Economic Security Bureau by Yermak & his assistant Oleg Tatarov zn.ua/ECONOMICS/v-be…
Estonia's Defence Minister, at the #Ramstein summit, tells @BBCWorldatOne that he does expect #Germany to allow Leopard tanks to be sent to #Ukraine, either today or tomorrow.
1/2 #Germany again fails to show guts and leadership, preferring not wanting to upset a Terrorist State.
Defence Minister Pistoriys says "there has not been unified opinion among the Allies, and the impression that Germany is blocking the supply of Leopard 2s is wrong."
2/2 It's quite possible Germany was the only nation unwilling to give modern tanks to #Ukraine, but at least it's reported that Berlin will not stand in the way of other nations giving their Leopard-2s to Kyiv.
#Germany’s new DM Pistorius has hinted the decision to "release the Leopards" may be made in the coming days or weeks. Berlin's MoD is starting by working out how many tanks they may have available.
Press briefing about to start in #Ramstein but #Ukraine may be further frustrated, champagne corks popping in Moscow.
#Poland's DM Mariusz Blaszczak confirms no decision was reached on giving Kyiv Leopard tanks, but
"I'm convinced that coalition building will end in success."
Already absolutely vitriolic messages I'm receiving from friends in #Ukraine about Scholz and #Germany.
Germany tacitly helped Putin in the Minsk agreements, Scholz more or less refused to help at the start of the war and now 11 months later refuses tanks to defend democracy🇩🇪🤮
Lloyd Austin speaking at #Ramstein starts press briefing by outlining again the latest package of assistance USA is giving #Ukraine, which I reported right at the start of today's thread.
Austin "today's meeting focused on Ukraine's needs for aircraft and armour"
The US Def Sec then spells out air defence already given by members of the coalition.
3/ Austin: "I commend our British allies (for supplying Challenger tanks)..." but then drifts off to other equipment donated, no more mention of tanks (yet)
4/ Austin: "I'm confident this group will remain united"
(Well, some divisions caused by Germany this evening methinks)
Austin now hands over to General Mark Milley, US Jt Chief of Staffs
5/
US General Mark Milley: "Eventually President Putin and Russia, will realise the full extent of his miscalculation. Until Putin ends his war of choice, the Contact Group will continue to uphold the rules based order."
6/ Now Questions - 1st about tanks
Austin: "You heard the German DM say earlier they have not made a decision about tanks. We have a window of opportunity here and we have to pull together the right opportunities... I don't have any announcement to make on Abrams."
7/ Q - How can Germany still be seen as a reliable ally?
Austin: "This is not about one single platform." he then drifts off to talk about Bradleys and any other stuff except tanks.
Fair to say the US Def Sec looks distinctly uncomfortable"
8/
Gen Milley: "For this year it will be very difficult to eject #Russia from all of Occupied #Ukraine land."
"This war will end at the negotiating table. Putin could end this war today. It's turning into an absolute disaster for them."
Meanwhile in #Kyiv there's a press briefing by US Senators, led by Lindsay Graham.
"Yes, we will still have to fight for the supply of modern tanks, but every day we make it more obvious that there is no alternative and that a decision about tanks must be made."
A very measured response from #Ukraine's President likely belies his anger.
A #Russia propaganda agent/journalist was today wounded in #Soledar.
Anastasiya Yelsukova is "war correspondent" with Readovka. She suffered shrapnel wounds to her knee in #Ukraine's shelling of the Sil' railway station in Soledar. Wagner group says she is now back in Russia
#Ukraine's warm spell is coming to an end, but temps are likely to still stay above freezing in most places.
Today another huge temperature record - this time in #Mykolaiv. The previous daily high on 20 Jan was just 9 degrees 68 years ago. Today a balmy 14 degrees.
Here's why #Germany MUST stop p*ssing around and send tanks.
The war won't end if #Russia takes all of #Ukraine. They openly say it on national TV.
Germany is in Moscow's sights:
Widespread reports emanating from Washington this evening that #Ukraine has been advised to scale back the military operation for the time being.
This would include conceding #Bakhmut to preserve lives and prepare for a later (spring) offensive to retake lost territories.
In the occupied part of #Kherson region, locals say #Russia is bombing its own side again.
Telegram channels report monitoring outgoing fire from Oleshky on the left bank, exploding just seconds later further away. Seems they're hitting #Radensk 20km away with 20 blasts heard.
Margot, thank you for your kind words and for donating the cost of a coffee.
Enjoy the weekend.
The Pentagon submits evidence to the UN of #NorthKorea's involvement in the war on #Ukraine
UN sanctions forbid arms trades with the closed state.
Spokesman John Kirby showed the media how weapons were sent to the Wagner mercenary group.
This may be the last tweet of the daily thread and it's encouraging news
#Ukraine's Def Min @oleksiireznikov says their troops can start training on Leopard-2 tanks even though they haven't received any yet. An excellent initiative which minimises delays
It continues to be fairly quiet in #Ukraine with no major missile attack for 9 days and even mortar attacks are less frequent in some of the usual hotspots.
In #Sumy for instance 'just' 15 mortars in Novoslobidsk and Shalyhinsk was shelled with artillery just once.
No injuries.
#Russia has now lost over 120,000 soldiers from its' regular army. Another huge daily number of sacrificial lambs on the altar of Tsar Putin: 860, one of the highest ever.
Also decent equipment numbers hit by #Ukraine according to their estimates.
Hello and welcome to the #Ukraine daily thread for the 330th time.
Yes, Thursday is Day 330 of #Russia's illegal war and still the bickering goes on between Freedom allies about whether to give Ukraine tanks to defend itself.
All the news throughout the day in one handy thread..
Busy yesterday? need a recap?
Scroll through Wednesday's news from #Ukraine here, where there was only one big story, as yet another tragedy hit the country.
