#Israel FM @elicoh1 cultivated a personal relationship with Gen @aftaburhan & Gen Dagalo @RSFSudan during his historic+groundbreaking visit [w/ #US consent] to #Sudan capital #Khartoum in Feb 2023. Cohen made history, not only bcz Israeli FM visited a major Arab/Muslim nation /4
but also bcz #Sudan made a place for itself in Arab history as the namesake for #Khartoum Resolution—the famous 1967 Arab League resolution that instituted the slogan: No peace, no recognition & no negotiation with #Israel. Those “Three Nos” have now turned into Three Yesses. /5
The two generals are respectively the President & Deputy Pres of a Transitional Sovereign Council that rules #Sudan since a coup in 2021. The Council is expected to transfer power to a civilian govt, which in turn will sign a peace agreement w/ #Israel in a ceremony in the US. /6
Signs that both al-Burhan & Hemedti are considering #Israel's proposal positively. In the words of FM Cohen: “The progress we have made with the two parties is very encouraging. If there will be a way that 🇮🇱 could help in stopping the war in 🇸🇩, we'll be very happy to do it.” /7
#Israel is uniquely positioned to try to influence the two warring #Sudan generals. Cohen during the February visit discussed with al-Burhan and Hemedti “🇮🇱's desire to assist in 🇸🇩's development efforts” including “food security, water resources management, agriculture etc." /8
#Israel FM Cohen “presented to his hosts an @IsraelMFA aid program for #Sudan, which will focus on projects and capacity building in the fields of humanitarian aid, water purification and public medicine.” /9
