Let me say this: I know Richard Spencer. I first him 10 years ago. He is highly intelligent, and just went off in the wrong direction.
The "alt-right" is a reaction to failure of the GOP. I've known a few people of the Spencerian type. Their alienation was not inevitable.
And let me say this: The paleo-vs.-neocon schism could have been averted, and should have been healed long ago, but the egos were too big.
Going back to the M.E. Bradford affair, the neocons were successful in intramural feuds, and this gave rise to a dangerous hubris.
As @Steve_Sailer said, the policy of Bushism was "invade the world, invite the world, in debt to the world." This is NOT conservative.
It is easy to deplore the "alt-right," but we must not forget the errors of "mainstream" conservatives the "alt-right" rebelled against.
BTW, you know who has done some good work to keep young paleoconservatives and libertarians inside the GOP tent? Morton Blackwell.
