These #s are pathetic. In prestige cable, I'm often the only woman & POC in the room & I'm biracial/black. I have to say something about the
conclusion of this study - that the lack of black writers means more stereotypes. Listen, white writers can do that work, too. Lately I see
an assumption that a black writers' job is to authenticate black characters for white writers. And maybe, on some shows, that's the gig. But
in my experience black TV writers bring a HELL of a lot more to the table than authenticating blackness. Non-white writers bring craft, too.
There are so many women, POC, LGBT writers bringing structural pitches, ideas, stories, beautiful moments to the table that have NOTHING to
do with a character who looks like them. We didn't get this far without being if I dare say it -- we're artists, too. So it pisses me off to
know how much the interpretation of these studies can perpetuate the false assumption that lack of black writers just means less blackness.
It also means, less TALENT. Period.
And that's not to say we don't ALSO bring great insight to the characters most like us & our loved ones. Of course we bring that, too.
I have so much more to say about this... personal stories, etc. But lastly, a thought experiment. Say you hit the jackpot & have Lin-Manuel
Miranda on a writing staff. He leaves to work on his own project. Would you be thinking, Oh man, we lost our "Puerto Rican writer"? 'Night!
