Journalists at @Gothamist @DNAinfo @DCist @Chicagoist @LAist: follow these steps to preserve your own archives:
1) Google your author name and publication. Click the down arrow on the URL in search result and click “Cached” to get the cached version.
2) If you have an author page, your list of pieces should be here. Hover over the links to get the URL’s of pieces you want to save.
3) Copy and paste the URL into the Wayback Machine at archive.org, OR
4) If that doesn’t work, google the title of your piece to access the cached version of that article, as in step 1.
5) From here, you may want to physically copy and paste, or screenshot/PDF, your article. Google cache may not last long.
6) Helpful tip for getting all of your URL’s in one place:
Also:
(People who are tech-savvier than I, please keep replying with useful tips and I will add them to this thread)
The Wayback Machine at archive.org has archives for entire homepages, e.g. web.archive.org/web/*/gothamis…

BUT...
…the trick is that you have to know when your article was published.

For older pieces, that’s why saving your author page is essential.
VERY IMPORTANT: ALL OF THIS IS TIME-SENSITIVE.

Google cache could disappear in a week or two. Wayback endures, but harder to navigate.
(With any luck, somebody will figure this out and you won’t have to take these steps. But better safe than sorry.)
