1/ Today is, for me, an important personal anniversary. #OTD in 1968 my parents, my sister and I left communism for ever. My father drove
2/ from Warsaw to Vienna through Soviet occupied Czechoslovakia. When we were leaving Warsaw, it was full of flags and banners with
3/ communist slogans because of a certain, now generally ignored, anniversary. It’s because of this fact that I remember the date of our
4/ departure so well. Emigrating from one’s country at a young age is always a profound experience but it was farther intensified by what we
5/ experienced in Prague (one of the last things I saw before we crossed the border into Austria was a Soviet tank) and the stunning sight
6/ of glittering Vienna at night: a huge contrast with the drabness and darkness of communist cities I had been used to. At that time I was
7/ convinced I would never see Poland again, but like with so many other “certainties” of my life, fate decided otherwise. Which is one
8/8 reason why I am usually skeptical about predictions in larger scale human & political affairs, even if made by celebrated “experts”.
