This is by me about one of the ways that negative stories about trans people find their way into the media
'Talking points' about trans people are usually positioned as being about what effect trans people have on others, not what effect others have on trans people.
There's a narrative at present that interprets attempts to centre stories about being trans in trans people speaking for themselves as being about promoting 'trans ideology'
This is a good tactic if you want to cast doubt; because you are drawing attention to the lack of skeptical frame around trans people's experiences. You turning experience into debate
Is there room for discussion about what trans people need? Yes, for sure. Lots of people are nowhere near safe and happy. But that discussion needs to be in good faith.
Part of the background to this is the addition of 'gender reassignment' as a protected characteristic in the Equality Act 2010. You can't legally discriminate against
The technique, then, is to find situations that inflame 'common sense' but are actually just applications of current law around trans people
As someone has just pointed out, a proposed review of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 is another driver for current discussion about trans people bbc.co.uk/news/uk-406927…
This is the current Gender Recognition Act (2004) legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2004/7/c…
