I say we need to be strong amplifiers for those below us and shelter them from power from above.
I we need to learn what the people we supervise do and how they work. We need to listen well and synthesize.
We need to constantly be thinking about who is not represented in decision making processes and take steps to include them.
We need to think strategically about how to make our policies and processes inclusive, sustainable, equitable, and flexible.
We need to approach those we supervise w/a trust they are willing & able to do their jobs well. We need to thank them abundently for their labor.
We need to be clear and consistent in expectations, and if a problem needs to be addressed be solution not shame oriented.
Set boundaries and lead by example. Don't expect staff to check email in off hours, don't do this yourself. Take sick time. Go on vacation.
Strongly advocate for professional development opportunities regardless of employee status (part, full, para, etc.).
(I guess I have strong feelings about this!)
Oh, and, hold the space for your staff to be whole beings at work. Don't demand personal disclosure but don't penalize staff for open emotion either.
