On to #NetNeutraility What's at stake? Who do you want to control the "last mile" of internet infrastructure, the end of the pipe that connects the internet to you? Since the connection is often limited, it makes sense to treat the internet providers like public utilities.
I don't want Comcast to throttle the information I receive. It is that simple. 3.7 mill comments were lodged w the FCC in the 2 months preceding 9/15/14 in favor of changing the internet to a telecommunications service and, thus, regulation under the FEC. #NetNeutrality
This reclassification (from Title I to Title II) occurred on 2/26/2015. Of course, the telecom companies weren't happy. They sued...and lost...and still threaten to appeal to the Supreme Court...but perhaps they won't need to, thanks to Mr. T-rump. #NetNeutrality
Enter the Trump administration. Trump appoints Ajit Pai as FCC commissioner. He is a former Verizon executive, an avowed foe of #NetNeutrality. Chairman Pai claims he wants to end the "utility-style regulatory approach" to the Internet & reestablish "the power of market forces."
This issue is another turning of THE BIG KNOBS. On 12/14 when the FCC considers "Restoring Internet Freedom." The world won't end if, under Mr. Pai's direction, the opinions of 3.7 million commenters are thrown out...but there will be long term consequences. #NetNeutrality
We can't sleep well w a POTUS who constantly cries "FAKE NEWS," strongly favors corporations, the wealthy, & policies that allow internet providers to strangle sources of information...The Libertarians have preached free market--GOOD, government--BAD, regulation for decades.
At the same time, they've squeezed funding out of the all the agencies that regulate (e.g. the IRS and the FCC) & then complained that the enforcement is poorly executed. This battle is more of the same.
