/ A self-centered thread. I’ve long been frustrated by the illegal immigrant dynamic. When Democrats passed Obamacare I was certain they would turn to immigration reform aka “amnesty” but Brown replaced Kennedy, then the midterms happened and that window seemed to close.
/ After Obama won re-election, Rubio thought he’d pave his way to the Presidency by reviving “amnesty”. Of his failures the biggest was thinking the American people would trust Obama to secure the border. Of course the Gang of 8 bill failed and the window seemed to close again.
/ All the pundits claimed that Republicans had ruined the party by rejecting amnesty pointing to a growing Hispanic population and claiming a demographic inevitability. They predicted a blue wave in the 2014 midterms. The exact opposite happened. Republicans won a landslide.
/ Sensing the window for amnesty closing quickly Obama reversed himself & signed an EO providing DACA. On the day he announced he would do this I said Republicans should hold a press conference saying they would bring a bill to build a wall and force Obama to veto. They didn’t.
/ At that moment I knew I wouldn’t vote for any Republican establishment politician as the Presidential nominee. I couldn’t trust them to end the scourge of illegal immigration. In 2014 I thought I would back Cruz who seemed willing to break from the party on principle.
/ Then Trump came down the escalator boldly declaring the negative affects of illegal immigration and claiming with certainty he would build a wall. I could pretend it took time to get on the Trump Train but the truth is he had me at hello.
/ From that moment every time Trump picked a fight or broke from norms or refused to apologize for his views all that did was reinforce my belief: Trump was literally the only candidate that I could trust to actually build the wall and permanently control the border.
/ So today’s “no wall no DACA” press conference is not a surprise to me. It validated that all the scorn I received for continuing to back Trump through it all was well worth it. It took a lot of courage and fortitude to steadily remain Team Trump but it has all been worth it.
/ There are still battles ahead but I sense the war is won. Trump has the entire party leadership behind him & they’re all on the same page: “no wall no DACA”. That in itself is huge. Facing that unity the Democrats must relent. Their base won’t let them survive DACA expiration.
/ So, in spite of Democrats crying otherwise, American democracy is working perfectly. I wanted a policy change. I backed a candidate that everyone said had no chance. I advocated for his election. He won and now I will get the change I wanted. I love this country! /end
