And now a brief thread on civics, inspired by the event in Hawaii yesterday, because why not (yes, I know why not, let's just do it):
Some person and/or persons made a terrible mistake in Hawaii yesterday, causing a panic and traumatizing thousands. How could this happen? What a failure of government!
And so immediately afterward, and through today, government officials appeared in front of cameras and tried to answer questions. They apologized, they promised investigations, improvements. People are mad. They want answers.
But what is forcing those government officials to provide them (as imperfect/inaccurate as they might be?) Nothing. There's no law. There's no Higher Government Official telling the Governor of Hawaii, you have to do this.
The officials naturally and automatically believe they have a responsibility to their citizens to respond to this. But what if they didn't? What if they just refused to say anything, or lied, or simply claimed "national security?"
Who would stop them? How?

Our government it is not driven by law, ultimately. It is driven by the individual senses of responsibility and duty among those who govern. When it's absent, well... now you know what happens.
This is why "character matters," not because Kids Are Watching.
