What should we make of the #NunesHoax? [THREAD]

The #NunesMemo confirms that the FBI's counterintelligence investigation began with Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, not the #SteeleDossier. The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016
Despite talking points from right-wing media, the #NunesMemo does NOT say that the #SteeleDossier was the basis for the FISA warrant re: Carter Page.
Multiple extensions of the FISA warrant indicates that the surveillance authorized by the FISC was yielding information.

The #NunesMemo was released first to right-wing media, specifically Fox News and the Washington Examiner.

@chucktodd: "Not a good look by the House GOP to release cherry picked excerpts through friendly media outlets in order to build a narrative."

The underlying intelligence, which has only been seen by a select few members of Congress and notably not Devin Nunes, does not support the conclusions in the #NunesMemo.
Despite sky-high expectations from partisan defenders of the President, the #NunesMemo is woefully underwhelming. It does not in any way discredit the #Mueller investigation, despite the fact that's it's clear the President hopes to use it that way.
Even Republicans are slamming the #NunesMemo.

Despite the fact that it is now clear that the #NunesMemo is really the #NunesHoax, it remains important for us to push Congress to #ReleaseTheDemMemo.

If Trump declares a #StateOfEmergency - a tool used by autocrats throughout history to consolidate power - he will justify it by using contrived statistics.

This is textbook authoritarian and it will require education & support for institutional guardrails to defeat.
Institutional guardrails include Congress & Courts.

The 1976 National Emergencies Act provides some checks & balances on Trump's ability to declare an emergency.

House Democrats must hold hearings & court challenges must occur.

Unfortunately, the 1976 Act was later amended to require the President's signature or a 2/3rds veto override in both chambers.

Thus, should Trump ultimately declare a #StateOfEmergency tomorrow, it will be on @HouseDemocrats to hold hearings ASAP & expose his plan.

The breadth of voices refusing to even consider a position working in the cabinet of the President of the United States should make even the most fervent Trump supporter worried.

And it's more than just generals who have been engaged in unprecedented public critiques of the President.

To most of us, Carter Page is an ignorant, half-witted Trump advisor with ties to the Russian oil industry. The media has practically made him out to be an idiot who got in way over his head. The problem with this narrative is that he is incredibly smart. (2)
In fact he graduated in the top 10% of his class at the Naval Academy and went on to work at high level positions for Merrill Lynch. He also served on the House Armed Services Committee and was in the Navy for 5 years. (3)
