Rashaad Penny Thread
Penny was extremely productive taking over for Pumphrey, rushing for over 2,000 yards his senior year as the main back for San Diego State. He also added 8 Career touchdown returns on kickoffs (7) and punts (1)
Penny runs with very good vision. He understands defensive leverage and is adept at hitting the cut back lane when it is open. Penny is a runner you need to be gap sound against.
Penny's vision is excellent, he is able to read when a defense is over pursuing, get skinny through the hole and get every yard available.
Penny has great patience, He draws the safety in here by pressing the line of scrimmage before bouncing it outside for the easy touchdown.
Penny runs with good strength and this gif is amazing. The linebacker grabs his undershirt and Penny takes him for a ride like he is on a sleigh.
To add to Penny's patience and vision look at him follow his block here. He waits for his fullback to lay the lead block and explodes through the second level, resulting in a big play
Penny shows good leg drive and ability to finish runs. He keeps his legs churning and will fight for every yard he is able to get.
At 5-11, 224lbs Penny is a big back. He does have a good burst and is able to get to a second gear. His long speed is good enough that if he breaks he wont get caught, but he wont be running away from people in the NFL
Penny has good agility. He isn't a strong jump cutter, but has enough lateral quickness to make defenders miss in space.
Penny will need to develop as a receiver, but does show the ability to have soft hands and catch the ball away from his body.
Penny is a bad blocker. There really is no other way to describe it. This will keep him off the field on third downs. He makes bad decisions, he can give bad effort, and he will get ran through. Here he picked up neither free rusher.
This is an example of bad effort on a chop block. If you go for the chop block you have to go for it, half assing it will get your QB hit and have you making friends with the bench.
Again this isn't going to cut it. This is the kind of thing that will limit Penny to being a two down back.
As a receiver, I think Penny can run a very basic route tree, i.e. flare routes into the flat. When they lined him up at receiver, I thought he had bad feet and struggled at times to get in and out of breaks. I don't think he will be breaking linebackers down in space often
When Penny tries for the edge he will go east west, more than north south. I don't think he has the speed to do this successful at the NFL level. These are plays NFL safeties will make.
This is a little nitpicky, but I would like for Penny to not get tripped up so much at the ankles. He runs with good power and has balance often, but too many times gets tripped up at the ankles.
Ultimately, I think Penny has the tools to succeed as a two down back, being a good between the tackles runner. I don't think he has the tools to develop into a three down back, and with his pass blocking woes, I don't think teams will force it.
Without the receiving ability, and game breaking speed, I see him as a day three prospect. He will contribute for a team and should find success due to his vision, but I don't see him as the game changer that others do.
