Also, fyi, Neelofa and Vivy Yusof are not muslimah icons for empowerment. Successful and smart business women, yes, symbol of empowerment or muslimah icon, no. Lemme show u a list of muslim women who have inspired me and I think are actual icons of empowerment.
1. Fatima Mernissi (Sept '40-Nov 2015), muslim feminist and sociologist who questioned the role of muslim women in Islam, the lack of democracy in the succession of Islam, separating the structures of Islamic governments from what Islam actually teaches. Defo my feminist idol.
2. Zainah Anwar, one bold Muslim woman who basically asked, why are syariah courts in Malaysia treating women like crap? What kind of Islam are they practicing? Also the woman boss enough to wave her hand to prove a point to Nazri Aziz in front of photographers.
Similar to Mernissi, Zainah also separated the religious institutions in Msia from the true teachings of Islam by going back to the Quran to what Islam actually says about women's rights in family law. Spoiler alert, Islam calls for just and equal treatment for Muslim women.
3. Dr Nur Rofiah, expert pentafsir al-Quran and really a walking encylopedia on Islam and gender (but the progressive kind). She is teaching Muslim women and men all over the world to rethink traditions we see as islamic and question if they are islamic or cultural?
If we had her heading JAKIM in Malaysia, trust me, perkahwinan bawah umur, poligami, keganasan rumah tangga atas dasar agama, dll. would be a thing of the past because she is not living for people who defend these practices as Islamic.
4. 4. Dr Amina Wadud, also expert in tafsir of quran and on Islam and gender. She has and continues to inspire muslim women to reclaim the quran and Islam from the men who have monopolised the interpretation of the quran to their advantage.
Amina's book Quran and Women, should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to learn about Islam because it provides us the perspective that was missing all alone, a woman's perspective in reading and understanding the Quran.
5. Mona Eltahawy, a Muslim women who is here to show all of yall that Muslim women also have red hair, cool rings and cool tattoos. She links the failure of the Egyptian revolution to the problems we have in society, esp with regards to treatment of Muslim women at home.
A woman who truly practices intersectionality by creating #MosqueMeToo and getting muslim women all over the world share their stories of harassment and calling out the problems in the structures muslim women live in.
Ok sis dah penat, so sesiapa lagi nak share ikon wanita Muslim please share!
Also there is a reason I shared their photos too.. i want to show that being a muslimah icon today is not limited to what you wear. It's about the work these women have done to elevate women's voices and bring the aspect of justice that's often missing in islamic governance.
