This is all I've heard from the right for YEARS. "Of course I reject those comments, but he also stands for sound policies like lower taxes for working people, protecting citizens from terrorism ..." The bigotry is just one part of the puzzle, they say.
The question in the soul of every American: If someone is doing good for your people/community, do you care that they're drumming up hate of some other people/community? Or do you say, "I don't care if this guy cures cancer, if he used bigotry to cure it."
I'm telling you, every demagogue uses the same playbook: "I will bring peace and plenty to you and your people, as long as you agree to hate the ones I hate and blame the ones I blame. Here, look at the good work I do!" My whole family just got taken in by that.
