I think that's because Hogg is acutely aware of his white privilege. As brave as he is, he's saying nothing that black students at violence-wracked schools haven't been saying for decades. And he wants to use his voice to make them heard too.
This matters because white and black victims of gun violence often tend to see different solutions.
