Tweeted this last night and of course it's followed by countless messages saying someone can't be principled if they're a Tory.
Everytime I read that sort of thing, I remember Edward R. Murrow's final reply to McCarthy. Wld strongly recommend you watch it all - it's magnificent
McCarthy attacked Murrow, as was his standard MO, because he was mentioned admiringly in the foreword of a book by an English socialist.
Murrow replied: "He was a socialist. I am not. He was one of those civilised individuals who did not insist upon agreement with his political principles as a precondition for conversation or friendship."
Would be nice if we could see rather more of that attitude, rather than the constant rampaging moral certainty & puritanism which appears to have overtaken people on this website.
