I’ve seen this quote a lot, but it strikes me as false equivalency. The overwhelming evangelical support for Trump, and the bad theology behind that support, is what’s at issue. Opposing white nationalism, misogyny, & corruption isn’t just as bad/“polarizing” as supporting it.
...Not to mention the fact that this “polarization” isn’t new. Evangelicals of color have been speaking against the white church’s alignment with religious nationalism for years and years. The election revealed fault lines; it didn’t create them.
Finally, I don’t think the response is to retreat to a sort of passive,
apolitical “we’re not taking sides” posture, but rather persistent, prophetic resistance that transcends political categories while remaining engaged in public policy issues concerned with justice.
There are seasons and circumstances when the careful, avuncular, “both sides” posture of Keller and others is needed. This is not one of those seasons, and these are not those kinds of circumstances....
While I have significant differences with, say, Russell Moore and Beth Moore, they seem to *get* how high the moral stakes are at this moment and why they demand more than a “can’t we all get along?” response.
