A small statistic from yesterday’s results:
BJP lost 26 seats with less than 6000 votes. 13 of those with margins less than 4000. It lost Maski with mere 213 votes, Hirekerur with 555 votes, Kundagol with 634 votes. If it had won even a few of these seats, it would’ve touched 113

Along with this, in some of the seats, BJP lost purely due to its rebel candidates.
1. Bailahongala in Belgaum. Ex MLA Jagadeesh Metgud rebelled against official candt V I Patil. Metgud polled 42k votes while Patil got 37k. Cong’s Kaujalgi won the seat by polling 47k votes!

2. In Indi in Bijapur, BJP official candt Dayasagar Patil polled 31k votes and came 3rd. BJP rebel Ravikant Patil got 39k votes. Cong’s YV Patil emerged as winner with 50k votes.
3. Jamakhandi- BJP lost by just 2795 votes. BJP rebel Sangamesh Nirani polled 24k votes!

4. In Gubbi, BJP’s Bettaswamy polled 46k votes and lost to JDS’ Vasu by 9k votes. BJP rebel Dileep Kumar secured 30k traditional BJP votes!
5. In Nagthana, BJP’s Gopal Karjol got 53k votes & came 3rd. JDS won this AC with 59k. Con fielded exBJP MLA Katakdonda, who got 54k votes!

Along with close margin losses and losses due to rebels, some of the seats were clearly lost due to bad ticket distribution. Basavakalyan, Khanapur, Bagewadi, Ranebennur, Narasimharaja, Varuna are some of the examples.
3 districts in particular have been bad for BJP:
1. Bellary- Although moving Sriramulu to Chitradurga yielded rich dividends in that district, it cost BJP in Bellary. Seats like Kampli, HB Halli & Bellary Rural which should’ve been won by BJP easily, were lost with small margins

2. Bidar- poor management of caste calculation, ticket distribution and perception management cost BJP this crucial district. It annoyed the strong Maratha community by nlt fielding a Maratha in any of the 6 seats. It also failed to use the Lingayat card.
3. Bangalore- backroom dirty deals of some BJP politicians to safeguard their own power cost BJP several key swing seats like Hebbal, Anekal & even a traditional seat like Dasarahalli. Some of the close contests like Vijayanagar, Byatarayanpura were lost due to poor turnout!
4. Raichur- poor turnout in some seats along with local internal sabotage/rebels cost BJP 3 seats of Maski, Lingsugur & Raichur rural, all of which, BJP lost with under 5k votes. If it has won these seats, it would’ve taken 5/7 seats in this district!
5. Chamarajnagar- BJP lost Hanur & Chamarajnagar with very small margins, mostly due to internal sabotage. If it had won these two seats, it would’ve won 3/4 seats in the district
Central and Coastal Karnataka regions gave the biggest boost to BJP’s tally. This is the best ever performance of BJP in this belt, better than even 2008! BSY-Sriramulu played the biggest role in Central Karnataka while Modi-RSS played a big role in Coastal.
