In the next few tweets, I will highlight some of the great steps taken by Indian govt since 2014 towards improving the health status of the population. Much has been said about how little we spend, but no one is interested in looking at the great progress that is being made.
A disproportionate number of people who needed heart/vascular surgeries and joint replacement either avoided surgeries to end up with dire consequences or underwent surgeries to end up in poverty! Despite my initial skepticism with capping prices, this seems to have woked well.
Prescription medicines for chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, asthma, epilepsy, post-stroke and post-heart attack cost much lesser now than they did before 2014. A post-heart attack patient with diabetes who would spend 3k/month now saves on an average 20k/year!
Cheaper generics dont necessarily mean poor quality. With a good physician who can follow up with his patients, one can always prescribe generics with lower cost which are now readily available in over 3000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across India. This is a revolution of sorts!
The push for institutional deliveries, better and more efficient health check ups and a focus on ante natal nutrition, India's maternal mortality rate has fallen from 167 in 2013 to 130 in 2017-18. This effectively means that 10s of 1000s of lives at risk have been saved!
Mission Indradhanush has increased the "rise in immunisation coverage" from just over 1% per year until 2013 to 6.7% in 2016-17. It looks like, by 2020, India will acheve near complete immunisation coverage! At previous rate, India wouldve taken 3 decades to achieve this!
These are some of the many steps that have been taken since 2014 to correct the skewed health status of Indian population. With Ayushman Bharat, officially the world's biggest govt-funded health insurance scheme, India has taken another great leap into affordable healthcare!
A lot more change needs to be achieved at community/individual level. India still ranks behind Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal in health indices. Maternal Mortality Ratio which is 8 in SL is 37 in IN. We still have a long way to go. Hopefully it will happen over the next decade!
Generic disclaimer- I have nothing to do with BJP(except the fact that I may not see a better option to vote for in 2019!), neither have I been affiliated with any wing of any party. I have used useful graphics to put across my point. Keep your trolling to yourself and grow up!
