I realize this is akin to tweeting about one's fantasy sports team, with the same number of people who might care. But since I spent the past year buried in the thing and since I just submitted the final post-defense copy, I'm doing it anyway! My dissertation by the numbers:

I enjoyed @SITimLayden's essay on football's outsized importance. But since he asked: no, that idea didn't start in the 1940s. It began in the late 19th century, and there's some great scholarship explaining how it became an entrenched part of US culture. A partial reading list:

I want to add a bit of historical perspective to the details we've learned recently about the toxic culture of intimidation and abuse in Maryland's football program by going back to one of the earliest moments when that style of coaching was publicly challenged: 1954 Nebraska.
Back then Nebraska was coached by Bill Glassford. He came to the school in 1949, bringing with him a hard-driving and "merciless" approach that, rather than causing concern, earned him a fawning 1951 profile in the Saturday Evening Post.
Glassford was hardly an anomaly, of course. This was the era in which Bear Bryant conducted his famed Junction, Texas, training camp/torture chamber.

From 1931, legendary football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg’s leadership advice for football coaches (and apparently it applied to business executives, too)
Stagg had a separate list for players/employees
Remember, though: college athletes are not employees. They’ve just been encouraged for at least the past century to behave like employees.

there IS a need to keep the baby. the NHS is 1) spectacularly valuable and 2) does amazing things. but some change is needed..... if we always do what we always did etc....

BREAKING: After failing to gut food stamps in the Farm Bill, Trump has announced he plans to sidestep Congress & unilaterally slash the program by fiat—just days before Christmas.

1. A proposed rule issued today by the Trump admin would significantly weaken the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), by making it even harder for unemployed & underemployed workers to access food assistance, under the guise of harsher “work requirements.”
2. According to the Trump admin’s own estimates, the rule could jeopardize food assistance for some 755,000 Americans struggling to find stable work.

One surefire sign a dogpile is at least partially the product of GamerGate is the number of people explicitly denying gendered patterns of harassment that are definitely there.
Here's the thing: Even if the target of a GG dogpile has *genuinely done something objectionable*--and I'm going to emphasize they exaggerate, distort, and outright lie a LOT, so this is not as common as they claim--criticism can still be delivered via bigoted tropes.
And all of that is without going into a meta-analysis of who Gators target to begin with. Their campaigns against cis men are short lived. Their campaigns against any trans folk never ended. (Yes, some of their trans targets are still stalked)

The next government that will take over after this one may find themselves in a very big economic mess if things continue as they are.

I am very concerned about what I see. A thread.
Let’s start from the costs.

This Govt seem to be hiring on all cylinders. Into parastatals that are cost centers with zero to next to nothing revenue in return. The NASS is also raising their own budgetary allocations.

End game: over-bloated recurrent expenses.
We suffered in the last few years as economic ground to a halt and cost rose. Attributions include higher fuel costs with poor electricity. Many thought economy was being reset. Wrong

Subsidy is back and badder. Pilgrimage and fertilizer subsidy all intact. What are the returns?
