Don't get me wrong: ocean exploration is my job, & I'm all for serious funding of it...

But "putting further [space] exploration on hold"? It's not an "either/or" here, any more than funding research on specific diseases is an "either/or" vs fundamental research.

Exploration, in any form, expands our perspectives & ultimately requires us to examine ourselves - and those outcomes make a difference too in tackling the challenges we face for 11 billion people to live sustainably on Earth by 2100.
Imagine no "blue marble" photograph of the Earth from space - I don't think our awareness of the nature of our planet, & our relationship with it, would have been the same.

So let's not make this an "either/or" scrap. Serious funding for ocean exploration, full stop. [/end]

Today being the solstice & anniversary of HMS Challenger setting out on her voyage of ocean exploration in 1872, it's a good day to reflect on some of the deep-sea discoveries of 2018.

What a day! I've always believed that showing our #littleones what we do as 'grown ups' is vital. Do you agree? 🤔

As @hubbahubble & others point out, the discovery of the first confirmed exomoon will be like the 1995 discovery of the 51 Peg planet. It opens a new population of worlds beyond ours.

more and more people are bringing up the Gilded Age lately so it's probably important to remember how laborers gained victories back then because it sure as fuck wasn't through polite protest: it was by absolutely, 100%, unquestionably wrecking symbols of wealth and capitalism
here's a general rundown of what kicked off the Gilded Age
1873- Cooke & Company investment bank collapses, triggers economic panic
1875- 238 Grant cabinet members and associates are indicted for fraud
1877- Congress declares Hayes president after massive voter fraud scandal
Then in 1877 you have the Railroad Strike, which was in response to B&O Railroads slashing wages. It went on for 45 days, brought the American economy to a stop and only ended because the federal government sent in troops to intervene because state troops refused to fire.

Drug regulation is the topic of constant debate, and I sympathize with the FDA.
Many are unhappy with them;
Some want more/ better regulation, others less.
On the de-regulation side, you have Silicon valley libertarians (and other groups) who believe the FDA could be replaced with a "yelp for drugs"
