This piece barely seems to have been noticed (so it's probably a mistake to mention it at all), but just in case anyone was wondering, it is almost all complete 💩
Volcanos impact climate for sure. On short time scales (as mentioned in the video), eruptions like Mt Pinatubo (1991) or Krakatau (1883) can eject so much SO2 into the stratosphere that the resulting (reflective) sulphate particles cool the planet for a few years
The key is whether enough SO2 gets into the stratosphere where it doesn't wash out very quickly. The impacts of non-explosive non-tropical volcanos (Laki, Bardarbunga, Kilauea) are much more localized and may not have a detectable climate signal at all. [Laki was a big deal tho]
It's also true that there is quite a lot of Chlorine (Cl) in volcanic plumes - mostly in the form of HCl. Back in the day this source of Cl was (incorrectly) posited as a reason for naturally high Cl levels in the stratosphere explaining ozone depletion. [Narrator. No, It was us]
Now, Cl in the stratosphere does mean that volcanic injections of SO2 can cause spikes of ozone depletion agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…
But the long term trends are due to increases in CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) which are much more stable and almost all anthropogenic (notably, CFC-11, CFC-12 etc.)
One more little fact ere we go back to @NBCNewsMACH. Ozone depletion does affect surface temperature - but it actually causes a *cooling* because the greenhouse effect of stratospheric ozone is more important than the change in UV. [Net effect is little blue bar on 3rd row]
To summarise:
- Neither Kilauea nor Bardarbunga are/were emitting any SO2 or HCl into the stratosphere
- There are no CFCs involved at all
- Neither had any impact on stratospheric ozone
- Even if they had, the resulting ozone depletion would cause a slight *cooling*!
Claims by Peter Ward to the contrary are totally bogus and w/o foundation. Journalists, please, please, please, ask someone competent and independent before you do a whole story based on someone's crackpot idea!
Finally, it seems inevitable that someone blames volcanoes for all environmental changes whenever a new eruption (of whatever relevance) occurs. This "Volcano Gambit" has been used for decades:

Please help make it stop!
