Every bird-brainwave of @narendramodi and his handlers—from #Demonetisation to #CAA_NRC_NPR—is about testing India’s democratic spirit, to get people to meekly fall in line like sheep. “Discipline” lovers naturally see #JanataCurfew as “obedience” training. @IndianExpress
Despite the sanctimony, bird-brainwaves like #JanataCurfew stand the risk of ending up as fodder for vigilante groups to terrorise citizens. Who would have thought it would weaponise Bangalore’s police chief? @CPBlr @IPS_Association @Copsview @PMOIndia…
In the 2019 Global Hunger Index, India stood 102nd out of 117 countries, below Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. @timesofindia cartoonist Sandeep Adhwaryu reminds the nation of whom to (also) remember when it bangs its ‘thaali’ for the cameras. #JanataCurfew

Finally caught up w/ @iamjohnoliver’s episode on Modi last week. Clear, brilliant explanations about Gujarat - “when you are being asked about your role in the deaths of thoussnds, you simply don’t get to walk out of an interview”. Strategic quiet now returns. #DelhiViolence
Impressive research, Amit Shah’s heinous speeches, which Modi has not disavowed, & so well explained on Indian govt’s “diabolically clever two-step way” on #CAA_NRC_NPR , the new citizenship register plus Citizenship Amendment Bill -& the detention camps. This before last week.

#economiccrisis , #socialinstability #autocraticgovt #utterdenialofModimadeeconomicblunders #Delhigenocide #kashmirissuffering #CAA_NRC_NPR all of these & much more have taken a toll on most of us peace-loving Indians who reject hate/bigotry & 1/n
believe strongly in our Constitution.

I am at loss of words.

Many instances of Hindus helping Muslims & vice versa give a ray of hope. But it is equally disturbing that we get impressed by & HAVE to share such acts of brotherhood even after 75 yrs of independence. 2/n

Why #CAA_NRC_NPR is much needed?

India is a sovereign country. Every country maintains a right to control its borders & the government decides who comes enters, who stays for how long & which documents are necessary for the alien visitors to provide.
Our country has had a long history of continuous invasion & barbaric subjugation of the natives through forced conversions, beheadings, rapes, kidnapping, destruction of our places of worship, etc. #CAA_NRC_NPR
To a great extent such behaviour has been reduced, but it unfortunately rears it ugly head whenever Muslim population rises above 25% of the total population. For example, Lebanon. #CAA_NRC_NPR

The cop should receive a gallantry medal.
Look how he faces the rioter when a gun is pointed at him.
This is what is happening in #Jafrabad in the name of #AntiCAA protests. I don't think any of these rioters care anymore about what the protests are about!
This will send a chill down your spine. Is this what the #CAA_NRC_NPR protests all about?
Does this look peaceful to you?
Shameful that some are still justifying these protests in the name of secularism.
It's time to deny any support to these rioters!
These rioters have now killed Ratan Lal, a head constable with the Delhi Police. I think it is time to declare curfew in certain areas and then issue shoot-at-sight orders.
Violence shall beget violence. Let's stop this madness.

1n Just had a long chat with #GunjaKapoor @gunjakapoor. The reality is much scarier than what you saw on TV (yes she was mugged & physically assaulted). I’m telling you the sequence of events narrated by her. This woman in yellow “Upasana Sharma” is central to it
2n Gunja was interviewing the women at #ShaheenBagh. None of them seemed to know the details of #CAA_NRC_NPR they were protesting. Suddenly this “upasana” starts interrogating Gunja.. her first lines “I am a hindu, my name is upasana sharma, I am an organiser, who are you?”
3n “upasana” knew exactly what to ask & since Gunja hadn’t rehearsed her story got caught easily. Upasana & this creature below DRAGGED HER BY HER HAIR(!!!) to the 1st aid camp. “Upasana” seized her phone plus aadhar card & cash from her wallet. Now the other women...

@CTwinkley On #CAA_NRCProtests

India is a democratic country & dissent is a part of democracy. However, country has been witnessing dissenters being termed as "anti- nationals"; be it celebritries, students or the common public.
Every citizen of a democratic country has the right to dissent provided it is under constitutional action.

@CTwinkley on #CAA_NRC_NPR

Widespread protests have been taking place in various parts of the country and overseas since the CAA was enacted into law on 12 Dec last.

About 30 people sacrificed their lives & hundreds of people were injured since the protest have erupted.
Why so much resistance against #CAA_NRC_NPR?

Before I move on, a brief recap on what is CAA,NPR & NRC.
In CAA, Indian citizenship would be granted to the illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan & Bangladesh who have been living in India since 31st Dec 2014 or before.
Except Muslims -Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Christians , Sikhs & Paris would be granted Indian citizenship under CAA.
National Population Register(NPR) does not involve collection of documents, but capturing of the biometric data which would be sourced from the UIDAI.

I've made two trips to Jewar in the last 24 hours to find out more about the 17-year-old shooter at #Jamia - who exactly he was and why he did what he did.

This is what I found.

#JamiaShooting #CAA_NRC_NPR…
Family members, neighbours, and a school official in Jewar described the boy as quiet and ordinary. His act of violence took them by surprise.

In recent days, he had become even more withdrawn.

“We tried talking to him but we couldn’t get him to open up,” said his father.
In social media posts and conversations with some classmates, he spoke of restoring Hindu pride and expressed admiration for a right-wing activist whom police have accused of fomenting violence.

“For years, he had said he was going to do something big," a classmate told me.

1n Clearly the man was a lone wolf terrorist. Remember 40% of lone wolf terrorists have been diagnosed with mental illness.…
.2n this video of the #ShaheenBagh shooting is extremely revealing. Look how casual the policeman’s stroll is & how close TV cameras are getting to him. Clearly everyone here thought this was a toy gun and the fellow was fooling about
.3n his Facebook footprint is curious. The very first post is on the 11th of October 2019 & then no posts till 6th January 2020. Why? Seems an oddly suspicious Facebook profile created almost like a cry for attention, a desperate appeal for publicity

Subj: #CAA_NRC_NPR - The UK experience with a National Identity Register.
To: #Citizens of #India
Recommendation: The Protests should continue
Summary: The Identity Cards Act, 2006 was finally repealed in 2010 as unworkable, and violative of civil liberties.
Following the Sept 11 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, New York, the level of paranoia was high. One of the ideas to make Britain safe was to introduce compulsory Identity cards for every one. The full history of the National Identity Register is detailed..
The detail is eerily similar to what India is proposing.
The Act specified fifty categories of information that the National Identity Register could hold on each citizen,[1] including ...

#CAA_NRC_NPR Public discussion in Chennai

@nramind begins by highlighting the spontaneous, partly organised, nature of the mass revolt “upsurge” against an unjust piece of legislation.
Young people feel suffocated. Attacks across campuses - police wantonly attack on the libraries of Jamia with a glorious past linked to the national independence movement, attack on JNU - all with no indications that justice will be served.
Why such special savagery against Jamia, AMU? Let me blunt about it. It is repression of protestors, Muslims in particular.

#1/3 Both #SharjeelImam and #ArfaKhanum are no ‘impoverished, illiterate Muzlims who were denied new clothes for Eid when they were three’. They are educated, upper class Muzlim elite. And yet, they both speak the same language, of establishing a Shariah state in India someday.
#2/3 There are others like them, people like Irfan Habib, Javed Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, who pretend to be ‘liberal’ Muzalman, speak outwardly of the ‘constitution’ of ‘patriotism’ and syncretism. But when it comes to #CAA_NRC_NPR, all of them speak the same language - of Jihad.
#3/3 On the other hand, many Yindoos continue to be drunk on the brew of secularism, refusing to see the truth, parroting the propaganda that ‘only illiterate, poor Muzlims’ turn to ‘fundamentalism’ because they have ‘no choice’.

Few tweets on the bluff calling of South Asian Sufi-Mullah-Ashraf mafia by Modi-Shah through CAA legislation. Nobody dared to do it in the past starting with 1857.

I am quoting SR Goel in pieces.
"Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was the first leader to start sabre-rattling on behalf of his community. That was a year or two after the Congress came into existence. There is no evidence that any Hindu leader called his bluff at that time or at a subsequent stage.
On the other hand, there is ample evidence of how Hindu leaders tried to appease the bully.

Majeed Ullah Khan (@MBTparty President) Statement on #SupremeCourt Refusing Interim Stay on #CAA; Challenges @AmitShah to Visit Ongoing #ShaheenBaghProtests to Face Public Instead of TV Debates. #CAA_NRC_Protests Read Full: /1
He contended that #ConstitutionofIndia is “Common Sense” codified. It's clear that #CitizenshipAmendmentAct goes against numerous Articles. It's appalling that Court deferred hearings in refusal to put interim stay on draconian #CAA and modified #NationalPopulationRegister /2
People’s trust in a truly secular, non-partisan #SupremeCourt is wavering. Moreover, refusal on interim #CAA stay has common public concerned regarding growing, free reign of a bigoted, right-wing #RSS-#BJP specter looming over nation that we continue to battle on all fronts. /3

People across Indian cities are protesting, students are standing up against universities and colleges, many in Bollywood have spoken up against #CAA_NRC_NPR, the nation is in turmoil. In such chaos and turmoil, why aren't the Modi-Shah duo repealing this? (1/n)
There are perhaps many explanations to this, but increasingly at the level where it matters: numerically and electorally, there is widespread support and if you put it to test, the results of that will be majorly in favour. Good or bad, depends on where you are (2/n)
On an average, I take at least 100 cab rides a month, club that with the conversations I have with others on ground. Have spoken to cabbies in #Delhi NCR and Mumbai. There are drivers today who cancel cabs if they see a passenger from the minority community. (3/n)
