On #NationalVoterRegistrationDay, Georgians targeted directly by Gov. Brian Kemp for working to turn out voters are calling out his history of voter suppression.

Commissioner Olivia Coley-Pearson and Mayor Nancy Dennard were arrested and investigated, and acquitted.

THREAD.šŸ‘‡
Olivia Coley Pearson, the first Black woman elected to the Douglas City Commission, faced 3 investigations by the State Election Board (chaired by Kemp) for helping a first-time voter understand how to use a voting machine. She was acquitted of all charges.
After 2 trials, Commissioner Coley-Pearson's name was finally cleared.

September 20 marks #NationalVoterRegistrationDay, a day to remind yourself and others in your life who might not be registered to vote to do so now. Image
According to 2020 U.S. Census data, up to 1 in 4 Americans who could be registered to vote arenā€™t.
The midterm elections are less than 50 days away, and a slew of high-profile issues, such as abortion protections and LGBTQ+ rights, will be affected by which party controls Congress, as well as state legislatures and governorsā€™ mansions, in 2023.

On #NationalVoterRegistrationDay I want to commend everyone who is working to get fellow citizens registered, in particular, the work being done to restore voting rights to people with past felony convictions, including @GicolaLane, @BlairBowie and other @CampaignLegal staff. Image
A past felony conviction should never serve as grounds for permanently banning citizens from the voting booth. Today nearly 17m people can vote, or have their rights restored, but are effectively disenfranchised. #NationalVoterRegistrationDay LEARN MORE: campaignlegal.org/cases-actions/ā€¦

Today is #NationalVoterRegistrationDay!

Weā€™ve been using our open-records expertise to expose state-level threats to voting rights.

Here are some of our ongoing investigations:
From the influence of voting-machine company lobbyists to concerns about election vulnerability, weā€™re investigating Georgiaā€™s overhaul of its voting system.

Wisconsin has been at the front line of attempts to remove names from registered voter rolls. Weā€™re fighting for transparency regarding the effort by state officials to purge more than 200,000 names from the rolls before the 2020 election.

We were recently made aware that approx. 59,000 Ohioans who requested a voter registration form through Ohio Benefits did not immediately receive the form due to a system error.
A review found that 18,900 requestors were already registered to vote, 7,500 received the forms through other Ohio Benefits transactions, and 32,400 had not received a form at the time of the review.
On 9/14, @OhioDAS sent voter registration forms to all 59,000 individuals - thus remedying the situation well ahead of the deadline to register to vote for the fall election. In fact, today is #NationalVoterRegistrationDay. To register, visit VoteOhio.gov.

Mitt Romney thinks the United States of America in the year of our Lord 2020 is a "center-right" nation and therefore should be represented by a conservative SCOTUS.

I am almost speechless at this complete misunderstanding of the nation.

We are not center-right.
We are currently ruled by the minority in this country.

Not by "minorities".

By the minority, meaning the right wing.

The electoral college is skewed so far to the right that these people think the whole country thinks like they do.

That's a huge problem.
The Senate is composed mostly of white men who comprise 30% of the population but hold 71 of the seats. The Senators who voted to confirm Kavanaugh represent 38 million fewer people than the senators who voted against.

And Mitt Romney thinks the "center-right" is the majority.

1/ Today is #NationalVoterRegistrationDay, and in Texas the deadline to register to vote is just 13 days away on Oct. 5.

The pandemic has made it much harder to register voters. bit.ly/3iSoY1u
2/ In the first 7 months of 2020, new registrations in Texas were down nearly 24% compared with 2016.

In April alone, registrations dropped 70%. And while there has been an increase over the summer, it will likely not compensate for the earlier decrease. bit.ly/3iSoY1u
3/ "I think itā€™s fair to say the pandemic had a huge impact on new voter registration activity. You canā€™t go door to door and get people to register right now."

Democratic and Republican groups have had to abandon traditional in-person methods. bit.ly/3iSoY1u

I see some folks using #NationalVoterRegistrationDay as an opportunity to vote shame. To understand why that's a shitty and self-sabotaging thing to do, AND what to do instead, you can check out my convo with @TheWayWithAnoa about voter suppression. truthout.org/audio/how-to-dā€¦
Btw it's not enough to say that you are not shaming people who are being prevented from registering or voting bc it's not that clean. The system of voter suppression does not just directly suppress participation. It also grinds the will to vote out of ppl. Shaming compounds that.
I realize people are scared, but that's no excuse for making the situation worse for literally everyone. Let your fear motivate *constructive* action.

Since Don Lemon is trending for saying that we need to get rid of the electoral college...it's a common misconception that the electoral college can only be changed by constitutional amendment.

We don't need an amendment.
We need 74 more electoral votes.

The National Popular Vote bill will take effect nationwide when enacted into law by states possessing 270 electoral votes

As of 7/20, it's been enacted into law in 16 jurisdictions possessing 196 electoral votes, DE, HI, RI, VT, CO, CT, MD, MA, NJ, NM, OR, WA,CA, IL, NY, and DC Image

THREAD: Oh the elusive ā€œyoung voters.ā€ How do we inspire you to show up? If we talk to you, itā€™s clear we have it all wrong. You donā€™t need to be told to ā€œgo #voteā€ or itā€™s ā€œyour civic duty.ā€ (1/4)
For good reason, youā€™re pessimistic about whether it even matters if you participate. You are informed. Better than any generation. Digital natives. Can call bullshit on anything. But you donā€™t feel you have agency. How do we give you agency? (2/4)
Throw out voting as a ā€œfinal destination.ā€ Think of voting as part of a three-act journey.
Act one: learn the issues and candidates and register. Act two: #vote! But the most important act is the last. Act three: Hold ā€˜em accountable.Ā (3/4)

Today, September 22, is #NationalVoterRegistrationDay!! Hereā€™s an interactive chart I put together with @GraphicsInsider with the voter registration deadlines in every state and everything you need to know about registering to vote in a pandemic. Thread šŸ§µ businessinsider.com/how-to-registeā€¦
In every state + DC except North Dakota, you must be properly registered in your county to vote. You have to be 18 years old and a US citizen to be eligible to vote anywhere, and will need to provide a driverā€™s license/state ID card number or the last 4 digits of your SSN 2/
Some states also have specific rules that require you you to be a resident of your county for a specific number of days, and many states prohibit citizens on probation or parole for a felony from voting, so be sure to check w/ your state's rules, esp if you recently moved 3/

Happy #NationalVoterRegistrationDay from the Minnesota DFL! We are deeply proud of Minnesota for having the highest voter turnout in the entire nation.

Minnesota is the greatest state in the nation because Minnesotans have stepped up and used our votes to demand that it be. Image
Minnesotans know the value of having a say in our government, and we've spoken up to demand strong public schools, a pristine environment, and a state that treats all Minnesotans with the respect and dignity we deserve.
Minnesota is proof that, when states make the ballot box more accessible, people put their votes and their voices to work improving conditions for their communities.

If you are not registered to vote, today is the perfect day to change that by visiting dfl.org/vote!
