Weed, shrooms, LSD, & other PA drugs, from a pharm POV (well, at least this pharm chemist) are illegal out of pure control, BC I can't find a reason of why they're considered illegal now. I’m gonna keep out of most of the economic implications:
1)I’m gonna try to focus out of a medical, chemical, and biological POV, maybe social and historical. Lest see where this mindstorm gets me:
2)Start with the famous late Bill Hicks q “it’s not a war on drugs, it’s a war on personal freedom... keep that in mind at all times”. Why in personal freedoms? well he explains it better that I ever will, but basically BC “we’re free to put in our bodies what we want to put”.
3)Of course, I’m being blunt & not funny, that’s how I am, lol. But this raises Q’s of why’re other things legal. Tobacco? Why is alcohol legal if it is deadly? Let’s start that It’s toxic, addictive (physically & psychologically), destroys families, it’s effects on the body…
5)Well, now let’s take Psilocybin’s Toxicity for example: “nearly 1.7kg of dried mushrooms, or 17kg of fresh mushrooms, would be required for a 60kg person to reach the 280 mg/kg LD50 value of rats...
6)…Based on the results of animal studies, the LD of psilocybin has been extrapolated to be 6g, 1000x greater than the effective dose of 6 mg”.

This isn’t even from a fancy source, is Wikipedia.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybi…
7)Now, let’s see LSD: “The most significant adverse effect was impairment of mental functioning while intoxicated”; well, I’ve been frunk as duck then I could say the same about myself LOL. (Not even gonna touch cannabis on this)

Another fancy source:

8)Don’t get me wrong, I drink I like it, I’m FREE to do it, but I try to be very responsible (& maybe someday quit it), I know I fail many times, but I’m learning. It’s imbedded in our culture since more than we can even conceive, it’s in our DNA.
nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2017/…
9)Well, now that I touched history let’s dig a little on that: “Hemp is possibly one of the earliest plants to be cultivated. Cultivated in Japan since the pre-Neolithic period... possibly as a psychoactive material...
10)…An archeological site in the Oki Islands contained cannabis achenes from about 8000 BC”
Gonna keep a little mainstream sauce just to show that is “mainstream knowledge”.

11)To try to understand the consumption of mushrooms, from an historical & psychological point of view you have to go deeper, because most of it has been hidden from us, we have to start putting a little attention to “the crazy old men”, got my favorites to exemplify this:
12)
13)
14)
15)There’re are a ton more, @jordanbpeterson lectures from 2014 were my favorites in this topic. The @joerogan video with @PaulStamets , with the “Stoned Age Hypothesis” really made me think & at the end really realize at what state we’re defined by the nature surrounding us.
16)And if we are also defined by the nature surrounding us, then it’s also part of us, it’s not separate, we’re part of the same. We harm nature, we harm us (Karma if you like). Here is the link to the podcast:
17)Now, let’s talk about benefits. I’m not gonna put benefits of alcohol consumption or the dangers of psychedelics, BC that’s not what I’m writing. I try to understand it as a cost/benefit at the same time, right/responsibility, so you have to find THE balance, your balance.
18)For weed, this is already in a public motion, it’s going his way & doesn’t seems it's gonna stop, so what we have to promote is the moderate use, a more “balanced” one if you might. One of the first reasons it is illegal is for this: washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2…
19)One of the reasons psychedelics are illegal is because of this:

Understand also this, well:

20)John Hopkins University, promising against tobacco addiction:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27441452

This also:
usonainstitute.org/wp-content/upl…
21)And this is something that also blew my mind, if you can grasp what it implies: “Mystical Experiences Occasioned by the Hallucinogen Psilocybin Lead to Increases in the Personality Domain of Openness” ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
22)These drugs have the capability to rewire our brain, stop pathological behavior, with almost no neg effect. Little cost (precautions), great benefit (unknown quant), compared to other substances that I have the knowledge to even produce (opioids), with more cost than benefit.
23)Now DMT, less known, more exiting. It has been used in ceremonial practices in Ayahuasca since “hundreds of years ago”, but we really don’t know for sure. When you ask the tribes “who told them”, they say “the plant told us”.
24)John Hopkins is also interested:
dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ar…

We know is endogenous, produced by the pineal gland, “The Third Eye”, also called “The Spirit Molecule”; Here’s a read:
organiclab.narod.ru/books/DMT-The-…
25)The 3rd eye & the spirit molecule. That’s where the limit of my knowledge got, I read from cosmology, to quantum mechanics, psychology, religions, Tesla, Rodin, neuroscience, everything my mind had a question to. What are really those? What’s their real relation? Why?
26)To understand those Qs (I’m still not articulated & experienced enough to put it to words), you have to go deeper in your own mind & consciousness (& what consciousness really is) to get an idea of what I say, if you already do.
27)And closing with the start, this is my explained point for why “it’s not a war on drugs, it’s a war on personal freedom”, and like he said, always keep that on mind. We have to be responsible & measure the risk/benefit, always as part of the same, because the 2 always exist.
28)According to my crude way of being things, the Question is, are we mature to explore our other states of consciousness? Because that’s what they do. Alter our state of consciousness. (Elevating it according to some, & I believe in the evidence).
29)Well governments are saying “NO, you’re not mature & either way, we will maintain you ignorant, distracted, uninformed, misinformed & immature so you have fear of even considering it…
30)… And if you try it, we will lock you up. But we’re gonna stuck you up with the drugs & food that WE sell, that are proved to mess you up”. This war costs billions a year, is that a war for freedom, or a war on freedom?
Think outside the official version, it’s hardly the real version.
