Five years ago today, Edward Snowden revealed through journalists that the NSA was conducting the largest domestic mass surveillance program in American history.

Snowden changed the world, and we're all better off for it.
Thanks to Snowden's disclosures, people worldwide were able to engage in an extraordinary and unprecedented debate about government surveillance.

In the US his historic act of whistleblowing prompted all three branches of government to rein in out-of-control NSA spying.
After Snowden sounded the alarm, technology companies rolled out innovations that tightened security for everyone, making many of our digital communications more private.
In June 2013, Snowden warned of the dangers of giving governments excessive power to spy on their own people. Today, that warning rings truer than ever.
Snowden's willingness to risk his safety to uphold his values is an example for all of us. May this be the last anniversary he has to spend away from his family.
