It was Christmas Day when Aminta Cifuentes crossed into the United States seeking asylum to save her life. Aminta, a Guatemalan citizen, was fleeing her abusive husband. She had endured 10 years of violence.
Her husband beat her. He raped her. Once, he poured turpentine on her skin - he wanted to set her on fire. He threated to kill her if she called the police or if she left him.
Aminta had, in fact, called the police on her husband several times, but the officers told her they wouldn’t interfere in a marital relationship. So, she fled to the United States to save her life.
Today, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he will overturn the rule that allowed Aminta, and other women who are survivors of domestic violence, from seeking refuge in America. We should all be ashamed. slate.com/news-and-polit…

Americans deserve a criminal justice system that is both fair and smart. By passing the FIRST STEP Act, we can start to make our criminal justice system smarter.
For too long sentencing has been overly severe & disproportionately targeted communities of color – especially Black men.

A quick thread on federal judiciary nominee Thomas Farr, whose nomination is headed for a vote on the Senate floor. Farr is anti-voting rights, anti-worker and does not deserve a lifetime appointment. I remain ardently opposed to his nomination.
Farr defended a voter suppression law in NC that a court said targeted Black voters with “almost surgical precision.” He advised Jesse Helms’ Senate campaign in 1990, which sent postcards to voters in heavily Black precincts falsely informing them they were ineligible to vote.
Farr has represented corporations that discriminated against customers and workers, including a car company that allegedly imposed additional requirements on Black customers and a pharma company that allegedly created a hostile work environment for its female workers.

PAY ATTENTION: Republicans are trying to ram Kavanaugh’s nomination through without full transparency or accountability.
Historically, Democrats and Republicans have worked together to ensure that a Supreme Court nominee’s full record is produced prior to the nominee’s hearing and vote, but now Senate Republicans are refusing to produce Kavanaugh’s full record.
Republicans want to keep documents from 3 of the 5 years Kavanaugh worked in the White House hidden. Kavanaugh himself has said that those three years were “in many ways among the most instructive” to him as a judge. So how can they justify concealing these documents?

#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

We spoke to a Brazilian mother who was fleeing her country and seeking asylum in the US. She was a victim of domestic violence. Her abusive husband repeatedly threatened to kill her. Fearing for her life, she took her 9 year old son and fled to US for safety. This is her story:
First, she didn't want her name used. Or her son's name used. She crossed into the US (legally - at official border crossing) in Arizona and voluntarily surrendered to border agents and requested asylum. That was on May 28.
"The patrol officer asked me if I was ok. I said yes. He asked me where I was coming from. I said Brazil. He asked why I was coming. I said, 'to save my life and to save my son’s life.' He asked me all this on a telephone translation thing."

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

Today I prepared a beautiful 6-year-old girl in a pink hat for an #asylum interview.

ME: Do you want to go back to El Salvador?

CLIENT [eyes wide]: No!

ME: Why not?

CLIENT [looking down at table]: Because of the bad people.

She'll be deported before her 10th birthday.
That tweet above is pretty much verbatim what she'll be saying on Monday; her father will provide the rest. He'll tell the interviewer about the threats of kidnapping & murder, and what gangs do to children of people they extort if they can't escape. She will not receive asylum.
The case will be referred back to an immigration judge, who will find that she & her family have not suffered persecution based on any grounds that the law can recognize. By the time of her hearing, AG Sessions will have personally removed any doubt of the law around this point.
