Absolutely bloody marvellous. Theresa May has caved on a meaningful vote. Fab day for democracy. Chance of #PeoplesVote has gone up. So has chance of stopping Brexit entirely.

UPDATE. I have edited the column to inject more notes of caution. Still think this is good news. But more work will be needed before government concessions can be banked.

The Brexit talks are going badly because we need the EU more than it needs us. As a result, the government is making one climb-down after another.

Quick #Brexit thread on why the Withdrawal Agreement is taking so long to pass Parliament.

At the first run at the meaningful vote in December, 163 MPs spoke.

69 Conservative MPs stood up - but only 27 spoke in favour of the deal, including the frontbench ministers (who must)!
This understates a lot of support for the Withdrawal Agreement in Parliament (because of the payroll vote @addadc is so fond of).

But without the DUP, who remain opposed to the backstop, it is unclear where more support could emerge besides a handful of rebels or independents.
If the Withdrawal Agreement fails (as expected), the PM said there's a real chance of no deal or no Brexit. So what did MPs think?

Some didn't say. But there was massive resistance to the idea of no deal while a significant number (including Tories) backed a 2nd referendum

Brexit will fail. It only has 3 options:
1️⃣ N. Ireland follows EU rules.
Breaks up UK
2️⃣ UK follows EU rules.
Brexit makes us LESS sovereign
3️⃣ N.Ireland doesn't follow EU rules.
EU must check lorries crossing the border to protect its citizens. Good Friday Agreement☠️
Just so we're clear. That means that the only "deal" we're going to see in November will be one which leaves us permanently bound by EU rules that we will no longer have any say over.
Otherwise they break the Good Friday Agreement or dis-unite the UK.
There. Is. No. Good. Deal.
The only questions are:
Does the public support a deal that leaves us less sovereign than EU members? No.
Do they support No Deal? No.
Would Parliament allow No Deal or a sovereignty-stealing Brexit betrayal deal? No. (They have elections to win)
#PeoplesVote is the only way out

To clarify, I am remain, but I feel a 2nd ref is monumentally risky & perhaps dangerous:-

1. Polls haven't changed much, result could easily be the same
2. Another campaign of hate will embolden the far right
3. If remain win. Leavers will demand another vote
4. Chaos & unrest are likely whatever the result, possibly violence too

What happens if it's still 'Leave'? Picture the chaos, square one. You're simply allowing the Tories more time to fail to come up with a solution. Every day that continues people in this country will suffer
What if it's 'Remain'? Leavers will, with some justification, query why this vote is more valid than the first. This has the potential to cause a constitutional crisis.

People can say 'we know the facts now' all they like, that will not placate millions of angry voters.

1) What Dominic did
There may be solid behind the scenes reasons for Grieve voting against his own amendment, but what he did today is very symbolic
Other votes were important but this was the big one, the meaningful vote, and Grieve has made a grave error for a number of reasons
2) Firstly the entire Labour "soft #Brexit" strategy was built around the meaningful vote. It may have been real, it may have been fluff, but it was one potential line of defence that Grieve has now weakened.

Labour were clear and the 6 tests were being mentioned again
3) Secondly the meaningful vote amendment was something everyone could get behind & was hard to criticize.

EEA amendments had pros & cons and didn't satisfy all anti brexiters but this was easy to defend and support across the spectrum
