Hey sport #twitterstorians! I get to teach a First Year Seminar at @messiahcollege this fall on “The Meaning of Sports in American Life.” What other autobiographies should I add to the list of possibilities for this assignment?
As you can see, sports fans are included in my list of possibilities. And since many sports autobiographies are written by someone else (or co-written), we will talk about how to approach that as readers.
#twitterstorians are amazing. I sent out a call for help as I departed Texas this morning. And by the time I got to Nebraska I had a thread full of great suggestions. Thanks all!

I enjoyed @SITimLayden's essay on football's outsized importance. But since he asked: no, that idea didn't start in the 1940s. It began in the late 19th century, and there's some great scholarship explaining how it became an entrenched part of US culture. A partial reading list:

I want to add a bit of historical perspective to the details we've learned recently about the toxic culture of intimidation and abuse in Maryland's football program by going back to one of the earliest moments when that style of coaching was publicly challenged: 1954 Nebraska.
Back then Nebraska was coached by Bill Glassford. He came to the school in 1949, bringing with him a hard-driving and "merciless" approach that, rather than causing concern, earned him a fawning 1951 profile in the Saturday Evening Post.
Glassford was hardly an anomaly, of course. This was the era in which Bear Bryant conducted his famed Junction, Texas, training camp/torture chamber.

Stagg had a separate list for players/employees
Remember, though: college athletes are not employees. They’ve just been encouraged for at least the past century to behave like employees.

After a recent tweet by a friend of mine who was dismayed that no-one cared about the lunar rovers on the moon’s surface, I decided to make a thread on rovers – both manned and robotic.

Rovers had been planned for the surfaces of other planets since the early 1950s but it wasn’t until the Soviet Union launched Luna 17 carrying the Lunokhod 1 rover on 10th Nov 1970 that this became a reality.

Lunokhod means “moonwalker” in Russian. There were two Lunokhod rovers launched in
1970 and 1973 respectively and were the first remote controlled rovers on the moon. It wasn’t until 1997 than another rover (Mars Pathfinder) was placed on an extraterrestrial body.

Hey #twitterstorians Inspired by @KevinMKruse @HC_Richardson @rauchway and @TheTattooedProf thought I'd say a little about GOP government giveaway bonanzas in the 1860s, especially helpful to "rugged individuals" who conquered the West.
Why, in 1862 alone, the Republican Congress passed 1) the Homestead Act, giving away millions of acres of public land to (mostly white) men willing to settle in remote places (and UNsettle indigenous inhabitants). Huge entitlement!
2) the Morrill Act, establishing land grant colleges that would anchor education and agricultural development in territories not yet fully under U.S. control. Western universities have always been agents of colonization, folks.

So I was at an academic conference this weekend and had to physically intervene to prevent a sexual assault by a male colleague on a female colleague who was drunk to the point that she was clearly not in control of herself, and unable to exercise judgment or consent.
