1. What is the first question asked after any disaster or crises? It's a universal question. From the Haiti earthquake to the Thai tsunami to the Boston marathon to the Pulse nightclub. It links us across the globe. What is it?
2. Is my child ok?
3. It is why governments spend a lot of time focused on family reunification immediately after a disaster. It's our obligation to ensure that the fear and anxiety that a community faces is minimized for parents and their kids.
4. And I think beyond the horror of what we are seeing and reading about the separations at the border is just how inconsistent it is with everything a good government is supposed to do: minimize the destruction of the family unit.
5. Is my child ok?
We live in a country that now requires parents to beg the answer to that question because it is the US that is forcing them apart.
