Kids ripped from their parents? Indefinite detention? Dehumanisation? These are features, not bugs. A sizeable enough chunk of your electorate, as with ours, will support these measures not despite their cruelty *but because of it*.
If you're waiting for those who think citizenship is some sort of metaphysical natural kind that outweighs common humanity to say 'woah, now that's too far,' well friend, you'll be waiting a very long time.
