Altogether this was a reminder to me of the importance of economic theory.

What does the micro 201 model tell us? That cash should raise someone's earnings if they (a) have good business or investment ideas, (b) no capital, and (c) can't borrow. With cash they invest and make $.
The same model tells us that people who don't get cash grants should catch up. They too have good ideas. If they save a tiny amount every week, it's just a matter of time before they start their own businesses and make $ too.

Some academic job market paper advice.

You show already know that most people will only read the abstract and intro. So these need to be polished & self-contained. You will need to rewrite them every day for months.

But how to make them perfect?
This goes for both economists but also political scientists: I learned a lot by downloading about 10-15 QJE articles and reading the introductions and abstracts all in one sitting. Find 10-15 in your very broad area and see.
I don't know how Katz & Shleifer do it, but they manage to help authors craft complex articles into clearer, more straightforward prose than any journal I know. I assume it is time and attention to each article, and detailed advice.

Mini book review: I'm re-reading Ashutosh Varshney's "Ethnic Conflict and Civic Life". It is political science at its very best. amzn.to/2lNAAqD

On the surface it's a niche topic -- Hindu-Muslim conflict in India. But it's much more important and deeper than that...
First it's as clear an introduction to Indian politics as I've ever read, and gives me a whole new understanding of today's Hindu nationalist government. Not to mention how Gandhi's early social movement shapes politics a century later. All things I did not know.
Second, this is really a book about civil society and social capital. Its about how ties across groups and civic interaction not only stop violence but also shape politics in cities, states and the nation. And it's about where those ties come from. "Bowling Alone" for India.

In honor of #Halloween, here's a list of 31 of my favorite horror films you might not have seen, in no particular order:

1) Sleepwalker - Saxon Logan, 1984: A British comedy of manners, class warfare, and Suspiria-style fantastical slaughter. Extraorindary.
2) Litan - Jean-Pierre Mocky, 1982: Monty Python does The Wicker Man. A disturbing, absurdist nightmare unlike any other.
3) Abby - William Girdler, 1974: This deserves better than its reputation as "the black Exorcist." Extraordinary performance by Carol Speed. Sadly, I only know of a sole, poor quality 16mm print (and DVD transferred therefrom)

#Iran,
For the second day upper-middle class in Tehran are protesting and asking everyone to close their shops and businesses.
This development will make the regime weaker than before as some parts of the middle class were the supporter of a faction within the establishment.
Protests are spreading and security forces can’t stop them. We may see the end of Islamic Republic of Iran soon if Trump refuses to negotiate with Tehran.
Central Tehran is also on the streets protesting Iran’s policies. Tehran’s Bazar demanding changes and the number of protesters growing.
